Once again, it is time for the Kelly Walsh Speech and Debate Meet. The 2019 tournament will be held on the 11th and 12th of January. This year's speech meet is expected to be larger than years past with more schools attending. We would strongly suggest schools to register early to ensure that students are registered. Students may be brought off the waitlist, but there will be no guarantee of this.
Events – We will offer all WHSAA sanctioned events. ALL events will be classified Varsity. In all varsity events, we will have four preliminary rounds. Poetry competitors must use a manuscript. Humor, Oratory, Drama, and Duo must be memorized. Extemporaneous will contain both international questions and national questions. Please bring a copy of the congress legislation. Please email legislation to email@example.com no later than January 3rd by 5:00PM. The docket will be online come the 4th. Any legislation submitted after 5:00PM January 3rd will not be accepted. Students may submit up to two (2) pieces of legislation.
Doubling: Students may double or triple at their own risk under the HOPIE pattern. Students doubling in Extemporaneous speaking may not receive complete prep time, as draw will be instructed to NOT move students placings. This year we will be allowing students to double in the D pattern, which is why we have put POI in this pattern, in hopes to allow more students compete in it.
Lincoln Douglas: TBD
Public Forum: TBD
Policy: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce its restrictions on legal immigration to the United States.
Registration – This year Kelly Walsh High School will use the Joy of Tournaments (JOT) website registration and software. The website is www.joyoftournaments.com
Please register early because KWHS is limited by space and when the space is filled, no other options exist. Once all rooms are filled, the site will close and remaining entries will be placed onto a waitlist.
Drops will be allowed up to 7:30 pm on January 8th. Any drops after that time will be charged the entry fee.
Entry Limits: Due to the size of Kelly Walsh High School, only four (4) entries per event, per school, can be accommodated. Schools wishing to attend this meet will be entered on a first come, first serve basis. Once entries have filled, Kelly Walsh will implement the competition organization. To add more students, the site will place students onto a waitlist. Schools adding students to the waitlist should enter them in order of preference. In the past there have been students left on the waitlist.
Students WILLNOT be added to the tournament at the tournament.
Awards – Trophies will be awarded to the top three (3) finishers in each event. Debate will receive 1st, 2nd, and ties for 3rd. Sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the first and second place teams in the following divisions: 1A/2A, 3A, and 4A. Each event will be tallied as such: 1st place=7 pts, 2nd place=6 pts, 3rd place=5 pts 4th place= 4 pts, 5th place=3 pts, 6th place= 2 pt. , non-advancing semis = 1 pt.
Entry Fees– Individual events, Student Congress, and LD entries will be assessed a $7.00 (seven dollars) fee per competitor; Duet Interpretation Teams, Cross-Examination Debate Teams, and Public Forum Debate Teams will be assessed $14.00 (fourteen dollars) per entry. Drop fees will be assessed after 7:30PM January 8th.
Judges –Coaches may be asked to judge during the course of the tournament. More than likely, each coach will be judging one or two rounds. Accompanying judges are VERY welcome. This year there is a judge bond fee for schools who do not supply judges.
