Tyler Junior College is honored to get the opportunity once again to host this year's Phi Rho Pi Region VI Championship Tournament. The dates are March 20-22, 2020. The deadline for receiving entries is March 16, 2020 by 5:00 p.m. Changes may be made until March 18, 2020 by 5:00 pm without additional charge. Please log into the Joy of Tournaments website at www.joyoftournaments.com to submit your entries. Please make your entries ASAP so that I can plan the banquet.
The tournament hotel is once again the Baymont Inn located at 3913 Frankston, Tyler, Texas 75701. Amazingly, the room rate is a flat $82.99 for a King or Queen Double and $109.99 for a King Suite plus city tax of course (bring your state tax exempt form.) The hotel offers a complimentary breakfast and free internet. There is an outside pool. You can make reservations by calling the hotel directly at 903-939-0100 and say that you are with the "College Speech Tournament." Reservations should be made as soon as possible...definitely before March 8th!
IMPORTANT NOTE: Every school must have at least have one room at this hotel. On Saturday morning, we are going to run events at the hotel, using regular sleeping rooms (just like at Phi Rho Pi nationals.) In fact, I might have to ask some schools to donate more than one room depending on the size of our entries. (See note attached to the schedule.)
We'll have the Coaches' Meeting and Region VI dinner at Bodacious Barbecue (directly across the street from the hotel). People will be given a choice of one meat and sides and the price will be $15 (that includes drinks & tax) per person). Please send me an email with the total number of meals for Saturday evening to assist me in planning with the caterer. (If you need any vegan meals or if the vegetarian options , please mention that. NOTE: Each school will pay for their meals with their tournament fees UNLESS you need to pay separately (If you do need a separate receipt and/or need to pay with a credit card, please let me know in an email ASAP so I can alert our Business office.
Looking at the schedule, you'll notice there isn't a whole lot of time scheduled for meals, so for the most part, most eating will be on a "as you can fit it in" basis. We'll furnish the traditional pizza on Friday night for the coaches, debaters, IT people and hired judges. Then if you wish to order meals for lunch on Saturday, (scheduled at 1:30 pm and could be delivered to the hotel where we'll be) or dinner or lunch on Sunday, you can place an order from Jimmy John's, Jason's or wherever and they will be delivered. (Also remember there is a Wendy's, Bodacious Barbecue and Subway within walking distance of the hotel.) We also have a new delivery service in Tyler called "Waitr." You can download their App. (They deliver from Juicy's, Roost, Chick-Fil-A, Bruno's, etc.) Each school will be responsible for placing their own order and paying for it.
We will have bottled water available for students and coaches. We will also have special 'snacks' for the coaches furnished by the hostess with the mostest, Joan Andrews! Unfortunately we probably won't be able to furnish snacks for the students this year.
