2019 Holy Trinity 13th Annual Hurricane Debate
Dates: 9/7/2019

The Hurricane Debate Tournament at Holy Trinity Catholic High School

Information

What's Hurricane Debate?  It's a term coined here at Holy Trinity.  Here's what's different: Varsity and novice LD rounds will be back to back.  Novice debaters are asked to watch the varsity debaters in their room.  After they are done, the varsity debaters then serve as judges for the novice round in their room.

Also, where else can you try out THREE types of debate???  Do LD, then try PFD, and Extemporaneous Debate.

Why Hurricane?  Two reasons.  First, it's fast and furious, lots of flying around, and early in the season when everything is still chaotic.  Second, the 2008 HT Debate Kickoff was postponed due to the threat of Hurricane Ike.  We renamed the tournament "Hurricane" and will continue the tradition!

Location: Holy Trinity Catholic High School, 6608 W. Adams Avenue, Temple, Texas

Directions

From Austin or areas south of Temple: I-35 North to Exit 299 (Loop 363/Texas 36).  Take a left onto the loop.  Exit Adams/FM 2305 toward Belton Lake.  The exit circles around and puts you up to Adams.  Turn right (west).  Holy Trinity is about a mile up on the right.

From Waco or areas north: I-35 South to  Exit 304 for Loop 363 (the Buc-ee's exit).  Take a right onto the loop.  Exit Adams/FM 2305 toward Belton Lake.  Turn right (west).  Holy Trinity is about a mile up on the right. Be aware of delays between Waco and Temple.  Consider FM 2113 in Hewett and Texas 317 in Moody as an alternate route.

Deadline:        Entry deadline is Sept. 4 at 4:30 p.m.  Drop deadline is Sept. 5 at 4:30 p.m.  Drops after the drop deadline will result in loss of entry fee.

Entries:           Overall space in each event is limited.  Enter early to guarantee your spot.

Judges:           We ask that each team provide judges.  This tournament is a low-budget affair!  We will not be hiring judges unless they are not provided by the schools.  We ask that you provide as many judges as possible.  Ideally, please provide at least one judge for every two PFD teams, and one judge for every four LDers.  We will be charging fees for missing judges.  Please know that we will be using parents and other limited experience judges as necessary.  One-year out students (students who graduated last year) are welcome.  And, don’t forget your senior LDers can judge novice LD.

Meals:            We will have concessions for sale throughout the day.  There are several fast-food restaurants within short driving distance.

Awards:          The top six competitors in each event will be recognized.
