Dates: 1/11/2019 - 1/12/2019

The Senator Frank Church Invitational

Boise High School

Boise, Idaho

January 11-12, 2019

The Boise High School Speech and Debate team is happy to invite you to the first annual Senator Frank Church Invitational speech and debate tournament.  Our tournament is named for the former Idaho senator and Boise High debater, Frank Church. We are proud to honor his memory by hosting this tournament in our beautiful state capitol.  Boise High is just minutes walk from the capitol building and the center of downtown Boise. We would encourage you if you are coming to Boise from out of town to add a few days to your trip so you can enjoy our beautiful city.

In order to provide sufficient competition for all involved we will be offering five preliminary rounds of debate as well as quarters through final rounds. We will offer Policy, Public Forum, Lincoln Douglas as well as Big Questions Debate in both novice and varsity divisions.  In the speech category we will offer all 14 of the competitive speech events offered in the state of Idaho. In speech we will offer 3 preliminary rounds as well as final rounds. We will be following the Idaho High School Activities rules for each speech and debate event. Big questions is the only exception and we will be following NSDA rules. In speech events we will offer open division and in all debate except Big Questions we will offer both a varsity and novice divisions.

Rounds will begin on Friday as soon as we have cleared classrooms at the end of the school day.  Students can be dropped off in front of the school and then go directly to the cafeteria to await the beginning of the tournament.  The cafeteria will be the main gathering area for competitors in between rounds. Competition will be held in two buildings, the main classroom building as well as the Technology building which also houses our cafeteria and gym. Postings will be in two places, right outside of the cafeteria in the Church Technology building as well as in the main classroom building on the main floor just outside of the counselors office.  Concessions will be sold in the cafeteria and on Saturday a variety of food trucks will stop by to offer up food for sale.

Parking is always a challenge in downtown Boise but we have made arrangements on Friday for those driving to the tournament to park in the lot at the Cathedral of the Rockies church that is just across Franklin next to the back side of Boise High School or at the Baptist church that is just across the street from the tennis courts on 13th and Washington.  In addition you can park on the streets surrounding the school as soon as students clear out for the day and in the staff parking lot as soon as the teachers clear out. On Saturday you can use the faculty lot that is right next to the cafeteria. Do not park in the YMCA lot, it is small and usually full anyway.

Students involved in Congressional Debate will use the spring district three legislative packet.  The legislation will be available in early December for students to begin researching and preparing.

Entry fees are $15.00 per policy and PF teams, $10.00 per LD team, $7.00 per speech entry $7.00 per congress entry, $7.00 per Big Questions entry, and a $25.00 squad fee.  Students may single enter in debate events and double enter in speech events. Please note draw will start at 3:00 p.m. before school lets out for the day. Draw students please move quietly through the hallways to the draw room so as to not interrupt classes in session.

Entry Deadlines: Deadline for changes to your entry will be on January 8th at 5:00 p.m.

Tournament schedule will be added soon.
