Dear UIL Academic Coordinators/Sponsors:

Van High School is proud to announce its fourth annual UIL Academic and Speech Invitational Tournament January 15 and 16, 2010. The tournament will begin at 2:00 PM on January 16th with Ready Writing and 4:00 PM with Debate. All other events will be held Saturday.  We will be using independent testing materials.

EVENTS: All Academic UIL events and some NFL events (PFD, Original Oratory, and Student Congress). Poetry and Prose will be Reader's Choice.

ENTRY FEES:
Entry fees will be $25.00 for CX and PFD, $15.00 for LD and Duo Interpretation, $10.00 for speaking events and other interpretation events and $8.00 for all other academic events. In Debate, please call/email in any drops by 9am on Friday, January 15th.  Failure to do will result in a fee of twice the value of the original entry fee.  You are responsible for bringing a judge for each event in which you are entered (this includes every event—academic and speech).  In CX debate, you will need one judge for every two debate entries or portion thereof.  In LD and Public Forum debate you will need one judge for every four entries or portion thereof.  In public speaking events and interpretation events, you will need one judge for every six entries or portion thereof.  Speech judges, please bring your own stopwatches and timekeepers.

AWARDS:  First through sixth places will receive awards in all events, except NFL events which have less than six entries, in which case only 1st - 3rd will be awarded.  Sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the top three schools. There will be no team awards, only individual awards. Also, because this is a UIL Invitational tournament, NFL events will not count toward sweepstakes (but they are great practice).  Students from member schools who place in the top six of Cross-Examination Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Informative Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, Prose Interpretation, and Poetry Interpretation will qualify for the Northeast Texas Debate Association (NTDA) Championships held at Whitehouse High School in March.

FOOD:  We will have a concession stand on campus Friday and Saturday for students to purchase meals.  Breakfast and lunch will be complimentary for coaches and judges.

Please remind your students that your school will be disqualified if a student breaks any school rules. No student should bring food or drinks outside the cafeteria area nor should there be any smoking on campus.

REGISTRATION and PAYMENT:

Coaches may register online at www.joyoftournaments.com.  Please do not send your entries to us directly to Van High School.  Deadline for entries and drops is 5:00 pm on Wednesday, January 13th.  After that time, entry fees are forfeited.  All events will begin on time and latecomers will not be admitted.

Checks should be made payable to VHS UIL Academics.  Please either bring your check with you the day of the tournament or mail entry fees to:
