January 28, 2010
Dear Colleagues:
Tyler Junior College is thrilled to host this year's Phi Rho Pi Region VI Championship Tournament March 12-14, 2010. The deadline for receiving entries is March 9, 2010 by 5:00 p.m. Changes may be made until March 10, 2010 by 5:00 pm without additional charge. Please log into the Joy of Tournaments website at www.joyoftournaments.com to submit your entries.
The tournament hotel is the Holiday Inn Express located at 2421 Loop 323 E SE, Tyler, TX 75701. They are holding rooms at a flat rate of $79.00 plus 7% city tax (bring your state tax exempt form.) The hotel offers a complimentary hot breakfast and free internet. You can make reservations by calling the hotel directly at 903-566-0600 and say that you are with the "College Speech Tournament." Reservations should be made as soon as possible. IMPORTANT NOTE: Every school must have at least have one room at this hotel. On Saturday morning, we are going to run events at the hotel, using regular sleeping rooms (just like at Phi Rho Pi nationals.) In fact, I might have to ask some schools to donate more than one room depending on the size of our entries. (See note attached to the schedule.)
We'll have the Coaches' Meeting and Region VI dinner at the school hosted by Dub's Barbeque. The price fix will be $12 (that includes tax and tip) per person. Please indicate the number of meals for Saturday evening to assist me in planning with the caterer. (If you need a vegetarian meal, please let me know through email: mhin@tjc.edu. After dinner, we're planning some entertainment for the evening with your help! Please read below and plan to participate:
Saturday Night Entertainment ('double' encore presentation!)
After the dinner on campus, we will walk/drive over to the theatre (across campus) for a competition of Group Improv. Schools will be limited to one group...so choose your best representatives. (We will also allow hybrids if necessary and if time allows.) The rules are simple: Each team (of at least three individuals -that is why we allow hybrids) will be given a slip of paper with three things on it: a location, a person/occupation, and an object. The team then has 20 minutes to make up a 5-10 minute scene. A select panel of three judges will vote for the winners (sophomores and coaches will remember how fabulous our trio of judges was last year!) The winning group will receive a prize; as will the second and third place teams. (Obviously, these don't count for sweepstakes!)This should be an entertaining evening for all. So get your team together, brainstorm your best talents and come prepared to share. We plan to announce Finalists at the end of this event! We'll finish between 10-10:30 p.m. in time for everyone to get some sleep for the next day.
OTHER MEALS:
Looking at the schedule, you'll notice there isn't a whole lot of time scheduled for meals, so for the most part, most eating will be on a "as you can fit it in" basis. We'll furnish pizza on Friday night. Then if you wish to order meals for lunch on Saturday, Mar 14 (scheduled at 1:30 pm and could be delivered to the hotel where we'll be) or dinner or lunch on Sunday Mar. 15, you can place an order from Jason’s Deli ...and perhaps another choice. Those order forms will be available at Registration.
Tyler Junior College is looking forward to hosting this year's tournament. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
M'Liss S. Hindman
