We invite you and your squad to the twenty-fourth annual George McGovern Forensics Tournament to be held at Mitchell High School and Mitchell Middle School on November 20th and 21st. Our tournament staff tries very hard to ensure that all squads in attendance experience a friendly, fair, competitive and educational weekend here in the ‘Corn Palace’ city. At the ‘McGovern’ we try to offer something to please everyone. We will award beautiful plaques and numerous silver platters for our competitors. We will provide complementary meals in the lounge for our judges and coaches. We run a schedule that stays on time for everyone. We welcome back those that have attended in years past as we look forward to seeing all of our old friends as well as some new.
Categories of competition include novice and varsity policy debate; novice, and varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate; novice, junior-varsity and varsity public forum debate; novice, domestic and international extemporaneous speaking; novice and varsity original oratory, intormative speaking and humorous, serious, story-telling, poetry, program oral interpretation, non-original oratory, reader's theatre and duet interpretation events. Policy, Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum debaters will debate the current NFL topics and the South Dakota novice topic limits for policy debate (government surveillance drones, require specific warrants for all electronic surveillance, curtail the physical surveillance of Muslim communities) will be enforced. Additionally, in novice policy debate the use of counterplans and/or critique arguments will be penalized with an automatic loss. Squads in attendance must provide enough judges to cover their entry as the tournament will not supply judges.
Concessions will be provided for all students at the high school. Sweepstakes awards will be given to the two highest placing schools in ‘AA’ , the top placing school in 'A', and the two highest placing schools (with at least 5 entries and not placing in 'AA' or 'A' sweepstakes) overall based upon squad efficiency. All final round competitors in individual events and all placing teams in debate will receive awards.
Please complete your online registration by 5 p.m. on Monday, November 16th. You may make slight changes online until 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 21st, but after 5 p.m on Wednesday, November 18th no fees will be decreased due to changes.
We look forward to being your host.
