District III Debate Tournament: Saturday, February 24, 2016 @ Meridian View High School
Coaches may enter sixteen (16) debate entries in the District tournament, with no more than six (8) entries in a single debate division. Please do not register alternate entries on joy. List your teams in the order you want them seeded at the tournament (A=1, B=2, etc.) and then send an e-mail copy with the seeding designation to Herby Kojima at Eagle High School (firstname.lastname@example.org) so that he can double check to make sure your teams are in the correct tournament (1-4 or 2-3). Please include alternate debaters/teams in this email. Below is a quick chart of how your teams will be seeded based on your number of entries. If you have questions about seeding, please contact Donnie, Herby or Jeff.

Registration will close on Monday, February 19 at 3:00pm. Coaches cannot register any teams on joy after the site closes. All schools who register a full squad (sixteen entries) become eligible to draw a wildcard (17th entry) if the district's entries in any debate event create an odd number of entries. If you would like to create the possibility of winning a wildcard in an event, please submit these alternate names to Herby Kojima WITH your entire debate squad EMAIL ENTRY. (This email should separate students by event and rank them: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) Please designate for which event each individual or team is the wildcard.
All competitors will compete in six preset rounds. The intention of six rounds is to provide the greatest variety of competition. The tournament will follow four priorities when setting up rounds: 1) 1s will debate 4s and 2s will debate 3s. This power protection matching serves to protect your higher ranked entries. 2) Side rotation is mandatory (except in public forum). Brackets will not be broken (to protect the power) and all CX and LD entries will debate three rounds on the affirmative and three on the negative. 3) To ensure diversity an entry will not debate a competitor more than one time. If the field is too small to provide such diversity--and an entry must hit a school or competitor again--the team or individual will debate on the opposite side (except in public forum). 4) As this is a team event, a school cannot debate itself at district debate (although this is possible in elimination rounds at state debate). The top third of entries--which must be an even number to prevent BYEs--will advance to state debate.
Congressional Debate will operate in three sessions each lasting 2 hours and 45 minutes with the top 1/3 advancing to the state tournament. Our district will use the D3 2018 Spring Legislation. Each session will set the docket from this packet. Please remember that only squads with state qualifiers will be permitted to enter legislation into the state docket.
Reminder: Entry fees are based on expenses (tournament expenses, the use of joy and hospitality for the judges).
Please enter enough judges to cover your entries. A judge cannot cover half LD and half PF, as the tournament will not assign a single judge two different types of debate in a single round. However, a judge may be asked to judge any of the four styles of debate depending on the needs of the tournament (just as we do at state). So, be sure to get your judges certified online prior to district debate. Judges must be certified TWO WEEKS prior to the state tournament. Certify at www.idhsaa.org, click on speech arts, follow the links to watch the tutorial and then take the test. NOTE: We are hosting state debate this year. This means we hold an obligation to bring as many judges as possible. District III needs to make a presence as the largest district in the state and the location of the tournament. Please do your part for the community!
We want all coaches at the planning party. Meet in the Eagle High School library on Tuesday, February 20 at 3:00pm to set up the tournament on cards. All coaches are invited and strongly encouraged to participate for both educational and pragmatic reasons. Please RSVP Herby and tell him when you can arrive that day. We will draw for wild cards AS SOON AS THREE COACHES ARE PRESENT. My priority is not to wait for every coach to arrive to begin; if you care, arrange your schedule to be at Eagle first.
