Attention Speech & Debate Coaches!
It’s time for the 2012 Annual Phoenix Rotary 100 High School Speech Contest at the Phoenix Country Club located at 2901 N 7th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85012.
We begin with Opening and Semi-Final Rounds for the Upper-Division (Juniors & Seniors) and Opening and Final Rounds for the Lower-Division (Freshmen & Sophomores) on Monday, April 23, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The four Upper-Division finalists will compete at our luncheon meeting on Friday, April 27, 2012.
The Upper-Division finalists, their parents, their speech coaches, the Lower-Division winners, their parents and their speech coaches will be our guests at this luncheon. Winners will receive trophies and scholarships.
We provide two categories of scholarships for participants in our contest.
Scholarship Category One is our traditional aggregate of $3,450 of scholarships for 1st-through-4th place Upper and Lower Division winners to be applied towards any college or university of the student’s choice, as described in our contest rules. And, speech coaches whose schools place first and second in our “Sweepstakes” will receive trophies and cash awards. Please click “Contest Rules” and see the bottom of the last page for details.
Scholarship Category Two is a new and additional aggregate of $7,500 of scholarships for which any participant in our contest can apply towards any of the ten community colleges in the Maricopa County Community College District, and only towards one of these community colleges. Please click “Scholarship Offer” to see the “Application for Rotary / MCCCD Scholarship”. Your students can highlight and copy this application onto a “Word” document, fill out the application and email it, along with letters of recommendation from their speech coach and school principal, to the Rotary office (rotary@rotary100.org) – they should request an email “REPLY” to confirm we have received their applications. Our selection of recipients of these MCCCD scholarships will NOT be based on the students’ performance at our contest; but, rather, selection will be based on the content of the application and the letters of recommendation. We encourage your student participants who plan to attend an MCCCD community college to apply for these scholarships before the registration deadline of April 16th, 2012, but we will accept applications at any time.
Phoenix Rotary 100 has served our community since 1914 and we have held this speech contest for 81 consecutive years. Your students will speak to and be judged by business and professional leaders in our community, i.e. the type of real-world audience they will face when they use their speaking skills to persuade others as adults in the “real-world”.
Each school may register a team with a maximum of eight students (a maximum of two per high school grade) and one Speech Coach. The number of students and schools we can accommodate is limited and teams are accepted per the order in which registrations are received.
Please register your school’s participation by April 16th, 2012.
