Dear Middle School Speech and Debate Coach:
We would like to invite you to Olle Middle School’s ninth annual speech, drama, and debate tournament. Olle Middle School is located in southwest Houston at 9200 Boone Road, Houston, Texas 77099.
For the second year in a row, we will offer poetry slam, and we are excited to add world schools debate this year. (Please note: We will adjust the world schools debate schedule to reflect the number of teams entered.)
Important: We have changed and clarified some rules for 2020. Please take a moment to review the rule changes and clarifications on the Rules/Regulations page.
Preliminary debate rounds will occur on Friday, February 28, with debate elimination rounds occurring on Saturday, February 29. All other events will occur on Saturday only! If your school is not debating, you do not have to attend the tournament on Friday, February 28.
Registration will open at 9:00 am on Thursday, January 9, 2020. Participating schools must register on this website by 4:00 pm on Thursday, January 16. Once we reach capacity, new schools will not be able to register. Our tournament fills quickly, so we encourage you to register ahead of the January 16 deadline.
Because our campus is small, we must limit the size of our tournament. To give schools an equal opportunity to enter their students, we will implement the following procedures:
- When registration opens on Thursday, January 9, each school will be initially limited to...
- 5 entries per event in individual events and Congressional Debate.
- 4 entries per event in Lincoln-Douglas and public forum debate.
- 2 entries in world schools debate.
- When initial registration closes on Thursday, January 16, we will take entries off of the waiting list as space allows. To maintain competitive balance, we will pull evenly from all schools, and we will not accept more than 8 entries per event from any school.
- We will not take placeholders (Student A, Student 1.1, etc.) off of the waiting list.
The drop deadline is 4:00 pm on Tuesday, February 25. Drops after this deadline will forfeit the original entry fee. You can make name substitutions during registration.
Since our tournament is limited in size, we focus on providing the best judging possible. We believe that quality, constructive judging is crucial to the development of middle school performers. Consequently, our judging pool consists of trained adults from our faculty, our alumni, and our community, as well as carefully selected high school students who have successfully competed in high school speech and debate.
In accordance with Alief ISD policy, we have implemented safety procedures to protect our competitors, coaches, and parents. Before registering for this tournament, please read the information on the Safety Procedures tab.
Please note: Due to school policy, we are unable to accept personal checks.
Current Olle Middle School students will not compete in this tournament, and they will not judge during this tournament.
