2019 E. A. Olle Middle School Tournament
Dates: 2/22/2019 - 2/23/2019

Dear Middle School Speech and Debate Coach:

We would like to invite you to Olle Middle School’s eighth annual speech, drama, and debate tournament. Olle Middle School is located in southwest Houston at 9200 Boone Road, Houston, Texas 77099.

We have tweaked our schedule slightly this year, and we are excited to offer a new event: poetry slam.

Preliminary debate rounds will occur on Friday, February 22, with debate elimination rounds occurring on Saturday, February 23. All other events will occur on Saturday only! If your school is not debating, you do not have to attend the tournament on Friday, February 22.

Registration will open on Thursday, January 10, 2019. Participating schools must register on this website by noon on Thursday, January 17, 2019. Once we reach capacity, new schools will not be able to register. Last year, we reached capacity in three days, so we encourage you to register ahead of the January 17 deadline.

Because our campus is small, we must limit the size of our tournament. To give schools an equal opportunity to enter their students, we will implement the following procedures:

  • When registration opens on Thursday, January 10, each school will be initially limited to...
    • 5 entries per event in individual events and Congressional Debate.
    • 4 entries per event in Lincoln-Douglas and public forum debate.
  • When initial registration closes on Thursday, January 17, we will take entries off of the waiting list as space allows. To maintain competitive balance, we will pull evenly from all schools, and we will not accept more than 8 entries per event from any school.
  • We will not take placeholders (Student A, Student 1.1, etc.) off of the waiting list.

The drop deadline is 4:00 pm on Tuesday, February 19. Drops after this deadline will forfeit the original entry fee. You can make name substitutions during registration.

Since our tournament is limited in size, we focus on providing the best judging possible. We believe that quality, constructive judging is crucial to the development of middle school performers. Consequently, our judging pool consists of trained adults from our faculty, our alumni, and our community, as well as carefully selected high school students who have successfully competed in high school speech and debate.

In accordance with Alief ISD policy, we have implemented safety procedures to protect our competitors, coaches, and parents. Before registering for this tournament, please read the information on the Safety Procedures tab.

Please note: Due to school policy, we are unable to accept personal checks.

Current Olle Middle School students will not compete in this tournament, and they will not judge during this tournament.

If you have any questions, you may contact George Tennison at (281) 983-8455 or George.Tennison@aliefisd.net. We look forward to seeing you in February.

Sincerely,

Mr. George Tennison—Director of Speech and Debate
