Dear Colleagues:

The Melissa High School UIL & Debate Team cordially invites each of you to the Cardinal Autumn Classic Tournament on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Melissa High School in Melissa, Texas.

We will be offering the following Speech, Debate events: Policy Debate (novice and varsity), Lincoln-Douglas Debate (novice and varsity), Public-Forum Debate, Informative Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, Prose, Poetry, Oratory, NSDA Informative, Humorous, Dramatic, Duo, and Congressional Debate.  For Congressional Debate we will be utilizing the UIL Legislation <3A/4A & 5A/6A>.

We will be using the UIL-LD Debate Topic.

Melissa High School

The new Melissa High School is spread out over three buildings (similarly to a junior college campus) with the main academic building at four stories in height.  We do have limited access to an elevator during the tournament, but it will be restricted to judges and students to whom access in essential.  In order to better aid the tournament in running on time and to prevent contestant and judges from constantly having to traverse the four story building, the debate portion of the tournament will be migrated to Tabroom so that electronic ballots can be used.  All debate judges and contestants will need to have Tabroom.com accounts.  If you need any assistance with Tabroom, please do not hesitate to ask.

Judging Requirements

In order for the tournament to run smoothly and on-time, all schools must meet the judging requirements or your students will not be allowed to participate.  Unfortunately, we have a small, limited judging pool from which to draw.  Judges should bring their own stopwatches and should plan to keep their own time.

Policy Debate – 1 judge for every two entries or portions thereof

Lincoln-Douglas, Public-Forum Debate – 1 judge for every four entries or portions thereof

Extemp, Interp, Duo – 1 judge for every five entries or portions thereof

Special Note:  Please pay special attention to the term portion thereof.  If you have one or two entries, you must provide one judge.  If you have three or four entries, you must provide two judges.  If you have five or six entries, you must provide three judges.  Judges may only fulfill an obligation for ONE debate event.  If you have one CX team and one LD debater, you must provide two judges:  one for CX and one for LD.

Additional note about extemp and interp:  Judging shortages may force us to section some students from the same school into the same preliminary section of the individual events in order to free the judge from that school for a section.  We will only do this if it becomes necessary.

Cross-entries:  Cross-enter at your own risk.  We have tried to schedule in such a way as to allow students to compete in several contests. However, we will begin rounds on time as much as possible – it will be the student's responsibility to make sure that he/she makes the rounds as they are scheduled.  Please keep this in mind when cross-entering students.  In extemp, a student will not be given extra prep time if s/he is late due to entry in another event.

Entry Fees:

CX Debate - $30.00
LD Debate - $20.00
PF Debate - $30.00
IE Events - $10.00
Uncovered Judge - $125.00 per

Awards:  We will award the top six places in each event.

Entry Deadline:  Tuesday, October 9, 2018 @ 11:59AM
