Dear friends, colleagues, and program directors,
Kingwood Park High School proudly welcomes you to The Panther Playoffs, our first ever UIL speech and debate competition. The meet will be held at Kingwood Park High School on October 19, 2019. We are so excited to offer some great competition, learning opportunities, and a whole lot of fun. We hope to see you and your teams there!
Aline Theriot and the Kingwood Park Speech and Debate Team
We will be offering three full rounds of LD and CX as well as one round prelims of all individual events. As of now we plan to offer novice categories in all events except storytelling. However, we may have to reevaluate this later depending on registration numbers.
We will be following the standard UIL procedures for all events and using the fall UIL topics for debate.
LD Topic-- Resolved: The benefits of genetically modified food outweigh the risks.
CX Topic-- Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce Direct Commercial Sales and/or Foreign Military Sales of arms from the United States.
Storytelling will be offered as well but with a few fun and festive twists. The encouraged theme is “Happy Halloween and Happy Fall Y’all!”, so we are encouraging our contestants to come with their favorite Halloween or fall themed children’s book and be ready to impress their judge and mini judge—the mini judges will be children between 5 and 10 who will be providing feedback to the main judge on your performance as well to make experience more authentic by reaching the targeted audience.
**Stories that do not fit into the category will not be penalized in any way.

Hospitality, Concessions, and More
A hospitality room will be available to judges, coaches, and bus drivers. We will have breakfast and a catered lunch for you as well as coffee and refreshments. Food trucks and concessions will be available for students to purchase food and drinks.
A Halloween themed photo station will be set up in our commons area and pictures will be available for $1 each.
And last but not least, it wouldn’t be a Halloween themed competition without a costume contest! The KPark Debate students are hosting a costume contest with some sweet and spooky prizes for the top three costumes. The contest will be held in the commons from 9-4, so contestants have time to change in between their events. All those participating will take a spooky photo and be judged by a panel of students. Winners will be announced before awards. Please remember all costumes must be child friendly!
We want this day to be filled with both learning and fun!
