2018 South Texas NSDA District Tournament

South Texas Schools:


The 2018 South Texas NSDA District speech/debate tournament will be held February 22-24, 2018 at Bellaire High School.  All entries for the tournament must be made on this Joy of Tournaments website no later than February 15, 2018.  NSDA entry sheets should be in the hands of the district chairman no later than February 21, 2018.  The entry sheets can be mailed to Jay Stubbs Bellaire High School  5100 Maple  Bellaire, TX 77401, e-mailed to BellaireDebate@sbcglobal.net .  Entry sheets must be complete in every way including interp titles and publication information. 


Students listed as Districts Eligible on your NSDA point site are eligible for entry into the district tournament.  Students who have not met all requirements at least 7 days prior to our tournament will not be allowed to enter (see newsletter for details).


Public Forum will be using the March NSDA topic.  Lincoln Douglas will be using the March-April NSDA topic.  Both topics will be announced by the National Speech and Debate Association on February 1, 2018.


Each school is required to have the head coach as well as one other individual available to judge for each day of the tournament.  Click on Judges page of this website for additional details.


Original Oratory & Informative:  Per the NSDA District Operations Manual each scripts for Original Oratory and Informative are to be received by the District Chair no later than two weeks prior to the district tournament.   Orations and Informatives should be sent no later than February 8, 2018 via e-mail BellaireDebate@sbcglobal.net or by mail (Jay Stubbs 5100 Maple Bellaire, TX 77401).  The script must identify the quoted materials, state the number of quoted words, include a works cited page in A.P.A. or M.L.A. format, and both the orator and the coach must attest by signature that the oration is the original work of the contestant. 


Coaches may pre-register students for Big Questions on Joy of Tournaments.  No late registration will be allowed during the tournament.  Each Big Questions entry will consist of one student only.  To be eligible for Big Questions debate a student must be pre-registered on Joy of Tournaments and also be eliminated from all main events by the end of competition on Friday February 23, 2018 (no students still in main events will be participating in Big Questions debate on Saturday February 24, 2018).  The first place student in Big Questions debate will qualify for the NSDA National tournament.  South Texas NSDA tournament will use the Big Questions debate topic posted on the NSDA website.


A scheduling meeting will be held at Bellaire High School in room 172 starting at 4:00pm on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.  The scheduling meeting will also double as early registration for the tournament.  All coaches are encouraged to attend.


Double entries are allowed. Students may only enter one team event (one extemp only).  Should a student qualify in a team event he/she must compete at nationals in that event. All students who are double entered in the district tournament are required to submit a Single Entry Letter of Intent form.  This form should also be submitted to the district chairman no later than February 21, 2018.


All outstanding NSDA national fees must be paid by February 22, 2018 or you will not be allowed to compete.  All NSDA District fees must be paid by February 22, 2018.  We pay our judges during the tournament and your entry fees are necessary to make this happen.  Checks should be made payable to South Texas NFL (NOT South Texas NSDA).  If you have any questions regarding the tournament please write to BellaireDebate@sbcglobal.net
