2019 Eastern Ohio National Speech & Debate Association District Congressional Debate
WHEN & WHERE:
The Eastern Ohio NSDA District Congress will be held at Our Lady of the Elms HS on Saturday, March 23, 2019!
REGISTRATION will begin at 7:30 am at Our Lady of the Elms High School.
Please send Congresspersons!!!
Eastern Ohio NSDA has qualified 2 Senators and 4 Representatives to the National Congress for the last several years. This year, we have the opportunity to qualify 8 Representatives, based on last year's numbers! Let's keep that tradition going!
AKRON/CANTON FOOD BANK:
The EOHNSDA District traditionally supports the Food Drive at Our Lady of the Elms, which benefits the Akron/Canton Food Bank. The District Committee asks each school to contribute to this worthy service project by bringing at least two (2) non-perishable food items or $2.00 per contestant. Be imaginative! Perhaps you can involve your entire team as we demonstrate our care for our neighbors who need help!
We will use the Joy of Tournaments website for registration:
You will find the “Green” Congress Registration Form on JoT. Once you register your team, you may download a pre-populated registration form directly from the [Entries] page of the website -- no need to fill in the names. If you have green paper – that will satisfy my slight case of OCD! In the event that you are green paper deficient, white or whatever will do!
The registration forms must be sent to the National Office – make ‘em right! Principal and student signatures are no longer required!
ALL students must be on record at the NSDA by Tuesday, March 19' 2019 by 6:00 p.m. EDST.
Registration will close at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 19, 2019.
ALL schools – Charter, Provisional and Member – may seat Congresspersons by memberships and degrees. The JoT website will tell you how many students you may enter.
Send your scenarios to Nick at firstname.lastname@example.org. We must have names and scenarios of contestants by Tuesday night, March 19! I will accept the "official registration" at The Elms on Saturday, March 23.
SCANNED REGISTRATION MAY BE E-MAILED TO: email@example.com
NATIONAL TOURNAMENT SINGLE ENTRY LETTER OF INTENT (SELI): You will find this form on the JoT or NSDA website!
The Single Entry Letter of Intent must be completed by any Student Congress competitor who has qualified in a solo event to the National Tournament. For example: Jermaine Brack has qualified in OO for GlenOak; but, he is competing at the District Congress. He must submit a SELI indicating his preference to compete in OO or Congress in Fort Lauderdale.
You may acces the NEW & IMPROVED SELI from the following link:
The Letter of Intent must accompany your registration!\
We are securing independent judges, if you have knowledge of any other independent judges, please forward me the information.
FEES: $ 10.00 per qualifying student. Eastern Ohio NSDA will provide an invoice.
SENATE: We plan on having a Senate that will qualify two (2) Senators to the National Student Congress. We must have at least eight (8) schools participate in the Senate to be a valid Senate. If the Senate gets too large, we will split it into two (2) qualifying Senates. We have not done this in the past, but it is an option should numbers dictate.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES: We will probably have five (5) preliminary Houses of Representatives. This year we will determine national qualifiers in the House from a Super Session! These are the new qualification numbers for 2018-2019:
16 - 29 + 2 Representatives
30 - 58 = 4 Representatives
59 - 87 = 6 Representatives
88 - 116 = 7 Representatives
117 - 145 = 8 Representatives
If you have multiple entries in the House of Representatives, you may group your Representatives as you wish. Your groupings must be evenly balanced between House Chambers. The groupings will be randomly drawn for seating in a House. Fill out all 3 scenarios! Once a student has been registered in a chamber s/he may not be changed to another chamber. If there is a drop, it must be filled by an alternate!
NON QUALIFYING HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES:
Traditionally, we will have a non-qualifying House for students who want to be at Congress but exceed a school’s entry slots. We need volunteers to run the NQ House. You must register non-qualifying Congresspersons with Nick Bollas. There is no place on the EONSDA registration for NQ House registration.
Kindly meet the deadlines! Have all registration appropriately signed. Group your Congresspersons by the scenarios on the NSDA registration form. Contribute to the Akron/Canton Food Bank! We will have another GREAT EOHNSDA District Congress at Our Lady of the Elms High School!
