Wheatland Sweetheart Classic

February 12 & 13, 2010

Dear Speech & Debate Coaches and Teams,

The Wheatland High School Speech & Debate Team invites you to the 2010 Sweetheart Classic on February 12^th and 13^th. Again we will be hosting the tournament at Wheatland Middle School which has the advantage of being all indoors. We hope to see you during Valentine’s Day weekend.

Registration: Please enter preliminary entries and update on a regular basis to assist us with planning. Final entries are due on Monday, February 8^th. Drops can be made online until 8:30 AM on Friday, February 12^th. Fees will be determined on Friday morning at 8:30 AM.

Awards: Trophies will be awarded for first to third place in each event with the exception of Novice Policy Debate (finalist only). Ribbons will be awarded to the remaining finalists. Sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the top two teams in large school, medium school, and small school divisions.

Events & Fees: We will be offering the standard events in two patterns. The HOPE pattern will be Humor, Original Oratory, Poetry, Extemp, Congressional Debate and Novice C-X (if 4 teams enter by Feb. 8). The D’s Pattern will be Policy Debate, L-D Debate, P-F Debate, Drama, Duet, and Congressional Debate. Entry fees are $6.00 per individual event and $12.00 per team event.

Entry limit: 5 students/teams per event. If you need more than five, check with us and we will work to accommodate depending on the number of entries and room availability.
Doubling is allowed within and across patterns with the following exceptions:
- Debaters including Congress and Extempers may not double within the pattern.
- An individual is limited to a maximum of three event entries.

Topics: The L-D topic will be the January/February NFL Topic (Economic Sanctions). Public-Forum will debate the February Topic (Lobbying). Policy Debate will debate the NFL topic (social services) and Novice C-X will follow the Wyoming Novice C-X guidelines.

Congressional Debate Legislation: In an effort to encourage research, please email Coach James (sjames@platte1.k12.wy.us) your competitor’s legislation by Friday, Feb. 5. He will compile the legislation and distribute it on Monday, Feb. 8. Legislation may only be added at the tournament director’s discretion after Feb. 5. Super Congress legislation (if needed) will be selected from the 2009 NFL National Tournament Legislation.

Judges: We have a solid pool of experienced community judges and former alums. We will offer judging workshops and guidelines to our community judges. Of course, any accompanying judges and coaches willing to judge are greatly appreciated especially in debate events. We plan to use coaches as judges for 1-2 rounds.

Meals: The WHS Junior Class will be serving a dinner on Friday night and lunch on Saturday. Dinner on Friday will be $5.00 per person and the menu is spaghetti, bread, desert, and drink. Lunch on Saturday is also $5.00 and the menu is chili, chips, desert, and drink. We will also have a concession stand available to students during the tournament.

Venue: This year we will be hosting the tournament at the Wheatland Middle School located at 2600 Mariposa Parkway. There is no school on Friday, February 12. Please have buses unload, park, and load in the Bus Loop located on the West side of WMS.
