Academic UIL Invitational Meet

February 24-25, 2012

January 12, 2012

Dear UIL Coordinator:

Sulphur Springs High School is excited about hosting our annual Academic UIL Invitational Meet on Friday, February 24, and Saturday, February 25, 2011.  The purpose of this meet is to encourage student interest, participation, and competitive spirit in UIL events.  Registration will be through Joy of Tournaments.  Please go to www.joyoftournaments.com. Click on the Sulphur Springs UIL Invitational Meet to enter students.

Registration for Friday’s events will be held in the Conference Center from 3:30-3:50 p.m.  The Conference Center is located directly across the hall from the cafeteria.  Registration Saturday morning will be held in the cafeteria.

There will be two divisions:         Div. 1 – 1A, 2A       Div. 2 – 3A, 4A, 5A

Total entries for certain events will be limited.  Entries will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.  When the maximum number of entries is reached, registration for that contest will be closed.  The contests listed below will have limited entries as indicated:

Computer Applications – 40 per division

Prose and Poetry – 24 per division

Informative Speaking – 24 per division

Persuasive Speaking – 24 per division

The Ready Writing contest will take place on Friday, February 24, at 4:30 PM.  Computer set-up for those opting to use their own computers will be at 4:00 PM.  Each contestant must supply his or her own dictionary and thesaurus.  Sponsors must be available for grading at the conclusion of the contest.

Labs that have computers equipped with MS Office 07 and a shared printer will be available for use for Ready Writing, Computer Applications, and Journalism events.  This will allow us to offer both divisions to take Computer Applications at the same time.  Please note time and room changes on the updated schedule.

There will be no C-X Debate competition this year.  The L-D Debate competition will take place on Friday, February 24, at 4:15 PM.  You must have one judge per two entries or a portion thereof.  There will be a $25 drop fee after 12 noon on Feb. 24, 2011.  Please e-mail Lana Van Vleet at lvanvleet@ssisd.net if you have  L-D questions.

Computer Science will be held on Friday, February 24, 2011.  Computer set-up for the hands-on portion will be at 4:00 p.m.  The written test will be held at 4:30 p.m. followed by the hands-on contest at 5:30 p.m.  Teams will consist of 3 competitors each.  You may enter multiple teams.  Computers will not be provided for the Computer Science hands-on portion due to our not being able to supply all IDEs that participating schools may desire.

The meet will follow UIL rules.  Medals will be awarded in both divisions to the top six winners in each event.  The top scorer in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics will receive medals.  In the four math and science events, contestants will be broken down by grade levels as well as divisions with medals to be awarded to the top six in each grade. Plaques and medals will be awarded to first place teams in team events.  Medals will be awarded to the second place teams in team events.  Plaques will be presented to the two schools in each division who earn the most points.

The location for presentation of the awards for each contest will be announced in the contest rooms before the contest begins.  Individual and team awards will be announced after the official results have been verified and recorded.

In order for us to continue accepting a large number of entries, schools must provide help with grading.  Each school entering contestants in the following events must furnish at least one grader/judge in each of the events entered:
