Byron Nelson High School
Angel UIL LD Tournament

Coaches,
Entry fee's are only $15/student and there are no judge fees!
Thanks for considering the Byron Nelson Angel LD Tournament. This is a tournament that we used to run internally for our squad and we decided to open it up to the public this year. Please bring your varsity LDers as well, we will allow them to either Angel for one of your novices or they can judge a round.
This entire tournament is a learning environment. Please let your "nervous novice" know that the point is to help guide them through a round. We feel it is difficult for debaters to know how to write cases or fully grasp LD Debate if they have not ever gone through a round. This tournament is just to help them feel comfortable. There should not be any debaters coming to just "watch." That will not help them as much as getting in and actually walking their way through a round.
We will not be charging judge fees. I have 20 varsity debaters who can all judge and guide a novice though an LD round. Also, I have a group of parents who have judged more than 30 rounds on the UIL, NFL, and TFA level. We are not expecting to make a fortune on this tournament, we just want a place for your student to come and debate some angel rounds with my novice debaters.
We will have a snack bar as well as selling food for both breakfast and lunch. So please help us offset our lack of judging fees by encouraging your kids to eat from our snack bar. For coaches, we will have a fully stocked hospitality room tended by one of our team mom's, Anne Fulton, who is a professional event planner and always has an amazing hospitality room for us.
Round #1 will be the longest. It could take up to 3 hours if the rounds are flighted. Round #2 will go a bit quicker and Round #3 will be a round that will run as a regular LD Round. After round #3, your student will have a much better grasp of what an LD Round is supposed to look like.
In addition, Round #3 will be power matched, so while we compute that, in between Round #2 & #3, two of my varsity debaters, Eric Pool & Matt Marxer, who both qualified for UIL State last year, will be going through a 20 minute Power Point on how to write an LD Case. It will hopefully bring your debaters full circle on how to get started on their own cases.
If you have any questions, please let me know. Look forward to having your team here!
Sincerely,
Brian Simpson
