Coaches,

Novice Extemp is only $10/entry.  This will run in the morning.  In the afternoon, we will have UIL LD Debate and these are $15/entry and only $25 judge fees.

Thanks for considering the Byron Nelson LD and Angel Extemp Tournament.  This is a tournament that we used to run internally for our squad and we decided to open it up to the public this year.  Please bring your varsity Extempers as well, we will allow them to either Angel for one of your novices or they can judge a round.

This entire tournament is a learning environment.  Please let your "nervous novice" know that the point is to help guide them through a round.  For extemp, we will have several of our varsity extempers in the draw room helping your students with the construction of the speech.  Once their speech is written, we will then have your novice go to a warm up room, where another of our varsity extempers will hear your student give their speech one time, as practice.  The varsity extemper will then give your student some tips, encouragement, and then send them to their official room for the judge to hear them.  We have increased the prep time from 30 minutes (normal extemp) to 45 minutes on the written portion and then 15 minutes practicing their speech. . .so the total prep time is one hour.  We feel this really helps your debaters understand the process of how Extemp should work.

Our judge fees are very minimal - $25 for a missing judge.  So if you don't feel comfortable judging, that is fine.  I have 20 varsity debaters who can all judge and a group of parents who have judged more than 30 rounds on the UIL, NFL, and TFA level.  We are not expecting to make a fortune on this tournament, we just want a place for your student to come and Òlearn the ropes of extemp.

We will have a snack bar as well as selling food for both breakfast and lunch.  So please help us offset our lack of judging fees by encouraging your kids to eat from our snack bar. For coaches, we will have a fully stocked hospitality room tended by one of our team mom's, Anne Fulton, who is a professional event planner and always has an amazing hospitality room for us.

Round #1 of extemp will take the longest.  After Round #1 we will have demonstrations by Brendan Gillette (4th in State in UIL Informative Speaking & National Qualifer) and Eric Pool (UIL State Qualifier and broke to the Top 60 in Extemp at Nationals).  We will have a quick Q&A with both of these guys and then start Round #2. Round #2 we will give the students the regular 30 minutes prep, but then will give them an extra 15 minutes with a varsity extemper to help them give a practice speech and be ready for the judge in Round #2.

Once we have done the two Extemp rounds, we will then have 2 rounds of LD.  LD will be judged by my varsity debaters as well as my debate parents.  Only my novices will all be competing at this tournament.  After the two rounds of LD, we will have a blind final round of Extemp (this means that everyone will give a speech, but no one knows which room is Finals).  This round will follow all UIL Rules, only 30 minutes prep, no help from varsity debaters.

If you have any questions, please let me know.  Look forward to having your team here!

 Sincerely,

Brian Simpson
