Dear HISD UIL Coordinators and Coaches:
It is an extraordinary year in HISD UIL!!!
A variety of academic contests have been developed for elementary and middle school students because the UIL believes that children:
Deserve Opportunities to accept academic challenges,
Improve with encouragement,
Soar when their talents are recognized and appreciated,
Climb to greater heights when given positive reinforcement,
Operate better from a supportive environment,
Visualize themselves as successful,
Energize teachers, administrators and each other,
Reach a greater level of achievement with praise, and
Yearn for opportunities to feel successful.
You are invited to participate in the fourth UIL Elementary School Academic Tournament of 2011-2012 at Whittier Elementary School. Our contest will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2012.
We are excited to be offering contests in: Art, Creative Writing, Dictionary Skills, Impromptu Speaking English, Impromptu Speaking Spanish, Listening, “Maps, Graphs & Charts”, Music Memory, Number Sense, Oral Reading English, Oral Reading Spanish, Public Speaking K-2, Public Speaking 3-5, Ready Writing, Social Studies, Solo Acting K-2, Solo Acting 3-5, Spelling, Storytelling English, and Storytelling Spanish.
A list of events according to grade level is included in this invitation.
Spanish events offered: Oral Reading, Impromptu Speaking and Storytelling.
Schools can enter a maximum of 4 students per event. A waiting list will be available. Students that advance to the finals of their speaking events will not be able to compete in the academic events that conflict with their final round. Students must go to their final speech round.
In keeping with UIL guidelines, students may compete in one testing event per time slot. A student may cross enter in the speech events with the understanding that to do so is at his/her own risk. An event will not be delayed due to cross entering. However, if there is a conflict in the final rounds, adjustments will be made.
We will conduct each event under the guidelines presented by the A+ Handbook 2011-2012 for Elementary and Middle School Contests. Rules/guidelines for Public Speaking and Solo Acting are included in this invitation.
Please remember, we need school support to run these events smoothly. All schools are required to bring at least one adult to serve as a "Grader/Judge". Those who are entering students in events that are also offered in Spanish are especially encouraged to also bring an adult that is fluent in Spanish to serve as a "Grader/Judge". The more Grader/Judge(s) we have, the smoother the day will be!
Schools can enter a maximum of four students for each division/event. You may enter additional students under the waiting list. Once registration has closed, and if there are some available spots, then your additional students might be entered into the tournament. This option, however, is determined by the tournament director. If students are added from the waiting list, you will receive an email from Joy of Tournaments.
Only those schools that have purchased an HISD UIL package are eligible to participate in this tournament. If your school has not purchased a package, but you would like for your students to become a part of what is a unique, amazing and growing program in HISD, please contact me for more information. I'll be happy to assist you!
Please don't delay, as registration on Joy of Tournaments closes at 4:00 on Friday, February 17, 2012.
Shine on!
