November 5, 2011
Birdville High School invites you to compete in the Birdville Brain Bender Invitational to be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011. This year’s meet will include all UIL academic events except for Debate, Persuasive, and Informative.
This year if we have enough entries, we will have two divisions, large school (4A & 5A) and small school (1A - 3A), and each division will receive awards. Two scholarships are being provided at the Invitational Meet.
The 1st place school in each division will each receive a scholarship to award to a student from that winning school.
We will use contest materials from a variety of sources. More details regarding contest materials will be available closer to the actual meet date. Math, number sense, calculator, and science contests will be divided into 9th/10th and 11th/12th divisions.
COST:
Poetry and Prose are $15 per contestant,
Journalism and Ready Writing are $10 per contestant.
Computer Science, $45 per team, additional written exams are $8 per person. (see below for more info)
All other events are $8 per contestant
We will limit the total entries for journalism, computer applications, computer science team, ready writing, and speaking events. Please register early. We will close registration once we reach the maximum capacity regardless of the size of school.
A hospitality room will be provided for coaches, graders, and drivers. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be served. To ensure sufficient food please list your graders and coaches on the registration form. A concession stand will be available for students to purchase food throughout the day. Each school must have a designated adult in attendance at all times.
Click on the links at the top of this page for detailed information, including schedule, fees, and registration. Email me with any questions &/or concerns.
The computer science test will be hands-on as well as written; thus the reason for an earlier start time.
Maximum of 20 teams for the hands-on portion. So the first 20 teams that register regardless of the size of school will be able to compete. Schools need to bring their own equipment, floppy disks or flash drives, extension cords, and power strip for each team entered. Students wishing to compete in Number Sense will be allowed to leave for that test and return to compete in the hands-on Computer Science contest since there is a time conflict. Awards will be given for top 3 teams in the novice and advanced divisions of the hands-on contest. The cost for the Hands-on contest is $45.00 per team. The cost includes the the written portion of the Computer Science test for all three members of the team. If you would like to add additional students to the Written Computer Science test the cost is $8.00 per person. The number of students able to take the Written Computer Science test is unlimited. There will also be a separate Computer Science Team award for the school with three students scoring highest on the written test.
NEW THIS YEAR:
DUE TO BUDGET CUTS, NO MATERIALS (TROPHIES, MEDALS, TESTS, ETC.) WILL BE MAILED UNLESS YOU PAY A $10.00 POSTAGE FEE. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO PAY THE ADDITIONAL FEE MAKE PLANS FOR SOMEONE TO PICK-UP YOUR MATERIALS IF YOUR TEAM MUST LEAVE EARLY.
We look forward to seeing you at the Birdville Brain Bender Invitational.
