The Jenks HS Forensics Team invites you to the Trojan
Classic Tournament….back and doing our “No Snow!” dance!
When: January 9
& 10, 2009
What: ***For Oklahoma schools, we
have Qualifying divisions in 6A and 5A
*** For all
schools, we will have a full offering of ALL events in Championship division,
and Novice Debate in all three debate formats (sorry, no Novice IEs)
***Championship, 6A & 5A divisions will offer: Policy Debate, LD
Debate, US Extemp, Foreign Extemp, Prose, Poetry, Original Oratory, Standard
Oratory, Monologue, Humorous Interp, Dramatic Interp, & Duet Acting
(separate Humorous & Dramatic divisions in 6A & 5A, they are combined
in Championship); out-of-state schools should visit the “Events & Divisions”
page on this website for a detailing of Oklahoma’s rules on events
*** In
addition, the Championship Division will offer Public Forum Debate, Student
Congress (separate sessions each day), and Duo Interpretation; the Novice
Division will offer CX Debate, LD Debate and Public Forum Debate.
Why: Variety
& Quality: We believe we will have a tremendous mix of schools for this
event; I have been contacted by schools in Oklahoma,
Missouri, Arkansas,
Nebraska and Texas who plan to attend. Having your school here will make the tournament
even better!
Awards:
Ours are a cut above the norm…very student-friendly, and we give lots of them!
Date:
A great way to start the new semester off right!
Deadlines: We
really (really really really)
need you to make an “educated guess” about your entry before you leave for the
winter break (preferably by 4 PM December 16) so that we can reserve sufficient
classroom space for the tournament; your entry will not become “official” until
4 PM on Monday, January 5, so you can make changes “for free” until the
5th. If you do not “pre-enter” your “educated guess”, you are at the end
of the line on accepting entries should we run out of classroom space in
January.
After 4 PM on Monday (Jan 5), you are responsible for
the entry fees for all of your school’s entry. Drop fees of $5 per entry are
added for all drops (and adds) after 4 PM on Tuesday
(Jan 6). You can still make changes on the website until noon on Thursday, Jan
8, but you will be charged the $5 per entry penalty for changes in addition
to the entry fee. After noon on Thursday, the website will be closed and
you will need to make all changes directly with me, and the appropriate fees
will be charged.
Entries: No limit
on the number a school can enter in an event, but if we “fill up” we give
priority to those schools who gave us the “educated guess” entry before the
Winter Break. OSSAA limits (3 OSSAA events per student) apply to the Qualifying
divisions, but in the Championship division a student can enter as many events
as they like (cannot do more than one debate; cannot do more than one extemp). They
are responsible for getting to all of their events. Student Congress does not count against any of the
OSSAA limits.
Cross-entering: The
“Patterns” of events listed (which events conflict in time with others) are
completely arbitrary at this point and may change during the tournament week as
we adjust to use our rooms and judges more efficiently; there is really no
problem with students entering events which conflict by time (except for debate
& extemp as noted above); we simply adjust speaker positions to allow them
to speak in both rounds.
Judging:
1 per 2 CX teams, 1 per 4 LDers, 1 per 4 Public Forum teams; 1 per 12 IE
entries. Experienced students (over 150 NFL points) may judge in the novice
CX and LD (in keeping with the philosophy of making Public Forum debate an
event for the “general public,” we will use adult judges only in both Public Forum divisions), but of course cannot be
a judge on days/times in which they are competing. Please note those “novice
only” judges on the judges page.
Fees: CX : $10 (per
team)
Public
Forum $ 8 (per tem)
Duets, Duo: $ 6 (per team)
LD,
Congress: $ 5
All other
IEs: $ 3
Missing
judges $25 (per day)
Missed
ballots (assigned $10
but not picked up)
Schedule: The
“final” schedule for Saturday will be set by Wednesday, January 7 so I can balance
entries and room use. Debate rounds start on Friday at 3 PM; Friday’s Congress
begins at 5 PM. IE rounds start Saturday morning at 8 AM; debate elimination
rounds will begin by 11 AM Saturday; Saturday’s Congress will open at noon; we
plan the Awards Assembly to start by 7:45 PM. We have started the Awards
Assembly on or ahead of time for the past 5 years.
Food: We pride
ourselves on having the best snack bar around for the contestants, and your
coaches and judges will be well fed at our first-rate Coaches & Judges
Lounge. On Saturday, the Coaches Lounge will again feature food from Los Cabos, voted the best Mexican food in Tulsa! Both of those facilities are located
in the Cafeteria building, which is centrally located to all the competition
buildings, and both will operate during the entire run of the tournament.
Entries, drops, adds, etc. must be made through this Joy of Tournaments web site (it’s
easy…really…..) until Thursday Jan 9 at noon. After noon on Thursday, you need to talk to me directly or
one of the student tournament officials (Finn Terdal,
Hasibul Talukdar, Ryan Kelkar, Merritt Steele) for any changes in your entry. If
you need to talk to me, my office phone is 918-299-4415 Ext 2372; my home phone
is 918-743-7472; my cell phone (only turned on when I’m not at either land
line) is 918-346-3559. My school FAX is 918-298-6608; I can also receive a FAX
at home at the same home number. My e-mails are gchartney@cox.net (home) and gregg.hartney@jenksps.org (school).
(Whew….that should be enough ways to
reach me……..)
We hope to see you in January!
