THE BRONX ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS 

The Bronx Achievement Awards were introduced at the thirty-fifth annual New York City Invitational. They are conferred at the opening assembly of the tournament to community members for achievement in coaching, excellence in debate pedagogy, and/or encouragement of said community.

 

The first class of recipients, presented personally by Jon Cruz, included:

-- John McKay of Menlo-Atherton High School (CA), in memoriam
-- Jim Menick of Hendrick Hudson High School (NY)
-- J.W. Patterson of the University of Kentucky
-- Richard B. Sodikow of the Bronx High School of Science (NY)

 

The second class of recipients included:

-- Patricia A. Bailey of Homewood High School (AL), presented by Jason Baldwin
-- Will Baker of the IMPACT Coalition and New York University, presented by Todd Fine
-- Martha Carr of W.T. Woodson High School (VA), presented by Caitlin Halpern
-- Marilee Dukes of Vestavia Hills High School (AL), presented by Jason Baldwin

 

The third class of recipients included:

-- Michael W. Burton of Eastside Catholic High School (WA), presented by Josh Anderson
-- Joseph Gazzola of the Bronx High School of Science (NY), presented by Douglas Jeffers
-- The Rev. B.A. Gregg of Randolph-Macon Academy (VA), presented by Caitlin Halpern
-- Sheryl Kaczmarek of Newburgh Free Academy (NY), presented by Michael Bacon

 

The fourth class of recipients included: 

-- Jonathan Alston of Newark Science Park High School (NJ), presented by Nadir Joshua
-- Eric Di Michele of Regis High School (NY), presented by Jon Cruz
-- Stacy Thomas of the Hockaday School (TX), presented by Elizabeth Hadaway
-- Mark Webber of Khartoum International School (Sudan), presented by Maureen Haver

 

The fifth class of recipients included: 

-- Chris Castillo of the Altamont School (AL), presented by Jeremy Dudley
-- Jay Rye of the Montgomery Academy (AL), presented by Jeff Roberts
-- Nicole Serrano of Montgomery Bell Academy (TN), presented by David Marks
-- Joe Vaughan of Scarsdale High School (NY), presented by Doug Lieb

 

The sixth class of recipients will be announced at the opening assembly of the fortieth annual New York City Invitational.

 

THE NEW YORK CITY INVITATIONAL HALL OF FAME 

The Hall of Fame was introduced at the thirty-eighth annual New York City Invitational to recognize programs that have distinguished themselves over a period of time at the tournament. At the tournament, both charter members (recognizing historically dominant programs) and 2008 inductees (recognizing more recently dominant programs) were announced.
