The New York City Invitational
BIG BRONX XXXVIII

Registration is now open.

Dear colleague,

The Bronx High School of Science cordially invites you and your team to participate in the thirty-eighth annual installment of the New York City Invitational ("Big Bronx XXXVIII"). We are delighted to continue our tradition of offering a challenging and competitive tournament early in the year. We are proud of our competition's long history of excellence and look forward to presenting our best tournament yet.

This year's tournament will take place on October 24, 25, and 26, 2008. We have flipped weekends with the St. Mark's Heart of Texas Invitational, which will take place on the prior weekend.

The New York City Invitational features Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Team Debate, Public Forum Debate, and Legislative Debate. Bronx Science is a qualifying competition for the Tournament of Champions in all four events. Quarterfinalists in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, semifinalists in Team Debate, semifinalists in Public Forum debate, and the top six competitors in Legislative Debate will receive bids to the TOC.

Over the past three years, our tournament included participation from across the country, including teams from Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington State. We anticipate that even more states and schools will be represented this year.

Last year's final round in Lincoln-Douglas Debate featured the Hockaday School's Joan Gass and Trinity Preparatory School's Jake Nebel. Our Team Debate final round included teams from Lexington High School and Lakeland High School. Regis High School closed out the final round of Public Forum Debate. (Our tournament in Legislative Debate debuts this year.)

"Tastes of the World," our popular hospitality program introduced three years ago, will again allow attendees to be treated from meals from around the globe, in honor of the many cultures upon which our diverse student body is built. We are pleased to announce that a new parent steering committee has been organized to help us make the quality of this food and the ease of its distribution the best yet.

The considerable strength of both our competitive and judging pools across divisions, as well as our mandatory paradigm disclosure, open tabulation room, judge strike systems in both Lincoln-Douglas and Team Debate, and the newest installment of the nationally-renowned Bronx Round Robin in Lincoln-Douglas Debate will make this a tournament worth attending in all divisions. Our gorgeous, high-quality individual and team awards, perpetual trophies, and other special honors guarantee that your experience at the New York City Invitational will be remembered and celebrated.

We encourage you to register early, as we anticipate the tournament will fill very quickly. With low registration costs, meals provided, and free housing available for students (first come, first served), our competition at Bronx Science is one of the best values on the calendar. You can register online at Joy of Tournaments.

We hope to see you and your team in New York this October.

Yours,

Jon Cruz
