Dear Forensic Director:
It is with great pleasure that I invite you to the third annual Golden Desert Invitational on the campuses of Foothill and Green Valley High Schools in Henderson, NV, host sites of the 2008 Desert Lights NFL Nationals. Registration will take place at the Fiesta-Henderson Hotel and Casino on the evening of January 16, 2009, and competition will be held at the high schools January 17-18, with final eliminations rounds in the varsity debate events on the campus of UNLV January 19. We pledge to offer a contest with all NFL main events, fees that are reasonable, excellent hospitality to students, coaches, and judges, and a tournament run as fairly and equitably as possible. Our two tournament directors, Chuck Ballingall from Damien High School and J. Scott Wunn from the National Forensic League, will direct the tabulation for the third consecutive year. Prominent coaches from across the country will assist Chuck and Scott.
We have tried to select a weekend that works into the national calendar without too much conflict with established tournaments, but that also works into the busy convention schedule of Las Vegas. For those running tournaments this same weekend, please accept my apology for hosting at the same time.
In other folders on this website you will find specific information about the Golden Desert Invitational, including events offered, fees, schedules, and other information to make your visit with us as uncomplicated as possible. Please be especially mindful of deadlines, especially for hotel registration. If you have any questions that aren’t answered on these pages, feel free to email me at the address above.
I want to remind everyone attending that this is a two-day contest for individual events, congress, and lower debate divisions and a three-day contest for all varsity debate events. We insist that you make your travel plans very carefully so as to be able to participate in all scheduled activities. Going home early is rude and defeats the educational purpose of the tournament.
We are also pleased to announce that the TOC Advisory Committees and Dr. J.W. Patterson have designated the Golden Desert Invitational as a qualifier at the quarter-finals level in policy debate, public forum and congress and a semis bid LD.
We look forward to welcoming you to sunny Southern Nevada in mid-January.
Ted W. Belch
