2017 Golden Desert NSDA District Tournament

Dear Colleagues:

Along with Desert Oasis High School and Bishop Gorman High School, it is my pleasure to invite you and your team to attend the 2017 National Speech and Debate Association district tournament to be held to be Desert Oasis High School on March 30 - April 1, 2017. This year we will be holding the District Congress on March 23-25 at Bishop Gorman.

There are a few rules that are different about this tournament than any other of the year so please read the invitation carefully.

In order for a school to attend this meet, the school’s NSDA membership and student dues must be paid for the year. That is the $99.00 school fee assessed to each school. Your students’ $15.00 membership fees must also be paid prior to the tournament. A student must have 25 NSDA points to become a member of the NSDA and to compete at districts. You can check nsdaonline.org to check for yourself. The number of entries that your school may send to the district tournament is determined by the number of members and degrees your students have attained on Wednesday, March 22, 2017.  This is the information that will determine the number of entries your school will have in both speech and debate and in congress. If you are going to use state tournament points for districts, you must have the points entered before the date listed above.

Your "green sheets" will be populated once you complete your online registration.  You will have to print these, obtain the requisite signatures, and turn in to me at the beginning of the Foothill tournament. I will also need the Single Entry Letter of Intent Forms as well. Remember, team events will count as one entry. I will need all the required signatures and scripts to be in my possession at the start of the tournament.

 

All (speech, and debate) entries must be in JOY by Thursday, March 23rd, 2017 at 2:00PM. As a district we need to show entries by this date, but don't worry, you can still make changes after this.  For the main tournament, registration will close on TUESDAY, March 28th at 2:00PM (PST).

 

Check the district site on JOY for congress information. I will allow you to make legal substitutions for sickness etc.up to the Wednesday before the tournament. Please remember however, that the students you will substitute MUST be listed on your forms as possible substitutions.

 

I must have your scripts at Desert Oasis High School on the first day of the tournament.  

 

You must use a state cover sheet for your interpretations and oratory or the sheets enclosed in this invitation.

 

Please remember I will have to verify that you have original sources at the district tournament so please remember to bring them.

 

We MUST bring enough judges. We will only need one judge in the Thursday rounds, but beginning with the second round on Friday we will need 3 judges in each round, This is a long tournament, and I know it is hard to find people to judge, but bottom line is everyone has to fill their own judge requirements. I am working diligently to find “clean” judges for this event. The possibility of me finding enough is pretty slim. I need your help. If you know people in the business community who haven’t helped in the past, but might be willing to help for this tournament, please ask them.
