District Debate Tournament Registration Procedures

Please read and comply with all tournament registration rules in the NSDA District Tournament Manual. NSDA rules require entry on Joy of Tournaments one week before the tournament (therefore by Friday, Jan. 13).  Entry of new schools is absolutely prohibited by NSDA within 48 hours before the tournament.  Only substitutions of students within events already entered is permitted after that point.  The District has no discretion to alter this rule. Southern MN NSDA requires all schools participating to register no later than Friday January 13th. You may make changes after that date but please have your initial entries made by 5 PM on Friday January 13th.  All schools must have their district registrations forms completed and handed in to the district chair no later than the time of registration on Friday January 20th. This should include all necessary signatures.  Please note that all students competing at the district tournament must be students of record no later than Friday January 13th, which is 7 days prior to the tournament. The NSDA will make no exceptions to this rule, so please get all of your NSDA points entered as soon as possible to avoid any possible complications with students being able to compete at districts. To be a full participating member the student must complete their individual registration with the NSDA.

District Debate Tournament Judging Obligation

Teams are reminded that they must have enough judges at the tournament to cover their entries. You must provide 1 judge for every 2 entries or fraction thereof. So if you have 3 policy teams entered you must provide 2 judges. Remember that by district rule the head coach must be the primary judge entered by your team. All hired judges must be out of high school a minimum of 3 years. Assistant coaches at schools who are less than 3 years out of high school may fulfill a school’s judging obligation but may not be used in place of the head coach. All assistant coaches who are in their 1st year out of high school will be placed on the supplementary judge strike sheet. Please make every attempt to cover your slots with judges that meet the district expectation of being 3 years out. Under no circumstances may a current high school student judge at the Southern MN NSDA Tournament.

District Dues and Fees Information

Remember that all fees and dues must be taken care of before your team can compete at the district debate tournament. The NSDA Office will provide me with a complete list of schools with outstanding dues owed the NSDA the week before the district debate tournament. You must make arrangements to have all dues paid prior to Friday January 13th or you can just bring payment or proof of payment (a signed copy of the school purchase order) with you to registration at the district debate tournament on Friday January 20TH. Finally, all schools should be certain to take care of their district entry and team fees before competition begins on Friday January 20TH. All entry and team fees will be calculated on the Joy of Tournaments registration site.
