You and your students are invited to enter the National Speech and Debate Association’s District Debate Tournament for Hoosier Heartland to be held at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, 2801 W 86th St, Indianapolis, IN 46268
The tournament will begin on Friday evening and continue on Saturday until we have our district’s representatives for the National Tournament in Birmingham in June.
Participation is open to schools who have registered with the NSDA and students who are members in good standing with the association.
Each team may enter up to four entries in each of the three categories, Lincoln Douglas Debate, Policy Debate, and Public Forum. Schools have a designated allocation of entries for district tournaments, so coaches should be mindful of how they wish to spend entries. A coach can check the district slots to use at the debate and speech tournaments at the NSDA site under “membership reports.”
Registration: Registration opened on Monday morning, December 26, 2016. Please submit your entries by Friday, January 13. To register, go to www.joyoftournaments and follow the site directions. (Remember, students must be activated –a star will appear next to their names on your NSDA team roster—and fees must be paid with NSDA.) Finally, there is a link after you have made your entries called "NFL DISTRICT REGISTRATION FORM." This form will allow you print out a GREEN SHEET with students’ names. This sheet must be filled out and SIGNED when you come to registration on Friday.
Fees: Teams must pay an entry fee of $5 per person. (One PF team = $10). One way to save money as a team is to bring extra judges. If a school brings an extra judge, the district will waive ½ the total entry fees. If a team brings 3 extra judges, the district will waive all entry fees. Checks for fees should be made payable to Hoosier Heartland District.
Judges: Teams are to bring 1 judge for each PF or Policy team and 1 judge for every 2 LDers. 3 LDers = 2 required judges. There is a $25 charge for uncovered judges.
Schedule: On-site registration will run from 4-5 p.m. on Friday, January 20. We plan to have a brief judge and competitor meeting at 5:15 and begin round one at 5:30. On Saturday teams should return and check in by 8:00 a.m. We hope to begin rounds at 8:30 that morning.
LD Resolved: Public colleges and univerisites in the United States ought not restrict any constitutionally protected speech.
PF Resolved: In order to better respond to international conflicts, the United States should significantly increase its military spending.
POLICY Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its economic and/or diplomatic engagement with the People's Republic of China.
Other ideas and information:
Please bring single entry letters of intent for students you know will double enter in the district tournament series.
Don’t forget nominations for NSDA District Student of the year. The district committee will not make this selection and announcement until the district speech meet, but I will accept nominations via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) beginning now. I will also have a form available at the district meet.
Please bring any perpetual plaques your students won in 2016. I will store them until the next event.
Come and join us to qualify our students to the National Tournament in Birmingham this June!
Hope to see you,
Aaron, Sara, Matt, Anna, and Paul
