Friday and Saturday, February 16-17 - Speech and Debate @ Columbia

You and your team are invited to attend the 2018 Idaho Gem of the Mountain NFL/NSDA District Tournament.  The Congress tournament will be held at Renaissance High on Thursday, February 15th, beginning at 12:00 noon (new time to accommodate travel schedules). The debate and speech portion of this tournament will be held at Columbia High School beginning on February 16th at approximately 3:00 pm and will continue on Saturday, February 17th until we fill our district allotment for Nationals.

Registration paperwork for this tournament must be in the hands of the district chair by WEDNESDAY, February 7th, at 3:00 pm MST and students entered on this website at 3:00 pm MST on the same date.   NO EXCEPTIONS!  Please e-mail paperwork to jstoppenhagen@nsd131.org.

The chambers for the Senate and House for Student Congress will be set after the Feb 7th deadline so please make any changes to this part of your entry ASAP so we can let students know their chambers.  Thank you for your cooperation!

The Drop Deadline for all events is Tuesday, February 13th at 3:00 p.m. MST. Drops made after this deadline will incur a $25 drop fee per entry.

The tournament will feature Congressional Debate (Thursday), and Policy Debate (CX), Lincoln-Douglas Debate (LD), Public Forum Debate (PF), Big Questions, Debate (BQD), Humorous Interp, Dramatic Interp, Duo Interp, Original Oratory, Domestic Extemp, International Extemp, Informative, and POI (all on Friday and Saturday).

Extemp will now use questions from December, 2017, in addition to January and February of 2018.

We will follow the National Speech and Debate Association's rules. It is the responsibility of all coaches to read and know the rules. In addition, please be sure that your judges read the rules as they are not the same as the Idaho Debate or Speech rules (IHSAA).

Remember that a student is limited in the number of events they can enter.  The system will not allow you to enter incorrectly as far as the number of events or the conflict patterns.  Public forum debaters may only enter duo interp if they have the same partners for PF and DUO.

SPECIAL NOTE (taken from the NSDA website):

Schools CANNOT compete in any part of the District Tournament series if they have an outstanding balance. Coaches, all invoices must be paid before each part of the District Tournament series. All schools are reminded to check for outstanding balances via the Points Application. The requirement for all schools to be paid in full is a Board of Directors mandate to ensure that all schools are held to the same standard for participation. Entries from schools with unpaid balances will not count toward your district’s entry numbers.

REMEMBER - Students MUST be registered with their own account on the NSDA website at speechanddebate.org.  If they are not registered, you WILL NOT see their name on the Joy website.  If you see a gold start next to their name on the points application report, they are registered.

To check if you have an unpaid balance, look for the little red "stop sign" on your school's homepage.  It will indicate if you have any balance with the NFL.  Remember, this must be paid prior to the beginning of the tournament on the 18th!

All events are just $5 each so we can cover costs of running the tournament

DROP FEES:  Students who do not show for their event will be charged a $25 drop fee per event.  Judge drops will be $100.

NOTE:  You may download a "pre-populated" registration form from the [Entries] tab of this website, under Registration, after you have registered your team.
