The
Colorado Grande NFL District Tournament will be held at Pueblo West High School
on March 2-3. Therefore, it is time to
begin preparing!
Important Dates:
Ø February 3—Email
Renee Motter at the email listed
above by February 3 to tell me that
you are or are not coming to the Nat. Quals
events/debate meet, or do this at Nat Quals Congress
on “Best Guess” numbers sheets. In that email list the number you plan to
bring in each event. Remember, you may have two additional free entries if you
enter two in every event. In the email, list the name of the coach who will be
attending. List the name of the TWO REQUIRED judges you will bring for
Friday and for Saturday.
Ø February 13—Your
Joy of Tournaments registration must be
input by February 13 (It’s not open yet, but I’ll let you know when it
is.).
Ø February 16—The
registration sheet (which can be printed off of Joy of Tournaments) and the OO signature sheets must be in my hands by February 16.
On this form, you must obtain a signature
from EACH of your entries and EACH
of your possible alternates. PLEASE tell the kids that I am NOT asking for their autograph. I am asking for a READABLE signature. If the
signature isn’t readable, I need the student to print the name beside the
signature. Obtain a signature from your
principal and don’t forget that you must sign it, too.
Ø February 22—OOs themselves
must be submitted to turnitin.com by February
22. On each page highlight the quoted words. On the last page, list the
number of quoted words. Remember, no more than 150 quoted words. NOTE: NFL REQUIRES correct MLA citations
within the speech as well as a correct MLA Works Cited page. Any OO you are entering must be submitted to turnitin.com with
all the appropriate citations and Works Cited. No OO’s
= no OO entries!
o
Original Oratory submission—each student entering Original Oratory must submit his or her own OO to
turnitin.com as turnitin will only accept one
submission per account (in other words, you can’t submit all of the OOs for your school), so have your OO
students sign up for an account and enroll in the Original Oratory class using
the following class ID #: 4727441 and password: forensics. Be sure your kids add their MLA at the end of
their speech as they won’t be able to submit this as a separate document to
turnitin.com—they can only submit ONE document per account.
Ø March 2—If
you have students entering multiple events (congress, events, or debate), I
must have a single entry letter of intent before they compete at this
tournament. I must have these for all
students who are competing in both congress and an event or debate as well as
students who are doing two events at this tournament. I MUST have the single entry form filled out
and signed (including principals and parents) before the tournament starts on
Friday; I’d prefer these with registrations as it’ll slow registration down
immensely if I have to check all of these at registration. If it’s not possible to get them to me with
the other paperwork, feel free to send them to me later but before registration. Do not forget this or your kid can’t double.
Ø
March 2—Call
Renee Motter’s cell phone 719-310-3809 as soon as you know you have a
drop on March 2 because we will be scheduling THAT morning. The reason: rules for scheduling are so
precise that if there is a drop, we have to schedule the event over again, and
it makes the meet start late!
Schedule:
Ø Registration begins in the Commons at 10:30
a.m., and the first round begins as close to 11:00 a.m. as we can get. We will get in at least 3 rounds of everything
on Friday. We’ll be figuring out the
doubling schedule for the first couple of rounds, but remember, there is no
such thing as a schedule because we run rounds as soon as we can as often as we
can. I do know that we will not finish
until 10:30 Friday night and that we will start rounds at 8:00 a.m. on
Saturday. Remember that no one can be
eliminated until he/she goes down in two rounds so we never know how many
rounds we will have to run, and doubling this year will be an additional
consideration in when we finish.
Judge Requirements:
Ø We can’t run this tournament without
judges, and because this is everyone’s responsibility, every school needs to
bring two judges to be available both Friday and Saturday (yes, they may be a
different two; in fact, that would be preferable as they would be clean for
Saturday). Remember, if you have
debaters you must have a debate judge available at all times. Not having enough judges makes the tournament
run longer, and none of us want that. J We
must all work together to find and bring judges. This benefits everyone’s kids because we will
have more balanced panels which makes things better for kids and competition!
Registration Info:
Ø We are allowing doubling again this year,
but we are curbing it a bit to help the tournament run more smoothly. Your kids are welcome to double as they
follow these guidelines:
o
Students
may not double in two debates (CX, LD, PF).
o
Students
may not double in both extemps (FX and USX).
o
Students
may not double in both solo interp events (DI and HI)
o
If a
kid enters both a partnership debate and DUO, the kid may only enter those two
with the SAME partnership.
o
If a
kid enters a partnership event and qualifies to nationals, they MUST go to
Nationals in the partnership event UNLESS both kids in the partnership qualify
in individual events as well.
o
No
Triple Entry unless the third entry is Congress.
Ø
When you are counting entries, remember that a
duo entry is ONE entry and a PF or a Policy team is ONE entry.
Ø
The number that you may enter depends on the
number of degrees that you have on record on Friday, February 24 at 3:00
p.m. Therefore, when you are registering
you may register for what you will have at that time. However,
there are no refunds. What you
register on your registration sheet is what you pay for.
Ø
A friendly reminder: You know that teens can be flaky and back out
on you. If you have placed other team
members' names on your alternate list, you may move those students into your
slots. Before February 24 you may
substitute a student on your list of alternates into any event. AFTER February
24 you may substitute ONLY in the event where you drop.
Money:
Ø
Pay
NFL for any unpaid memberships. Your team cannot enter unless you do so!
Ø
All fees for this tournament must be paid BEFORE
your kids can compete.
Ø Order a check made out to Colorado Grande NFL and if at all possible attach
it to your registration sheet. Fees are
as follows: $10.00 per person per event entry; $13.00 per person in a debate entry. This means that a duo team
is $20 and debate team is $26. Remember,
all bills to both NFL and Colorado Grande must
be paid before the tournament starts in order for your kids to compete.
Ø
FEES for
not meeting deadlines and for drops: If you miss the Joy of Tournaments
deadline on February 13, add $50 to your registration fee. If you miss the completed registration sheet
and OO's (with MLA citations and Works Cited) and ALL
interp info on the registration sheet deadline of
arriving to me by February 16, add $50.00 to your registration fee. If you drop anyone after 3 p.m. on February 29, add $20.00 per drop. If you drop anyone after 8 a.m. on March 2,
add $30 per drop. Those fees must be paid before your team competes. Your fees will be based on your numbers on
your registration sheet. From there your
fees will not go down based on drops, just up for late fees, etc.
Rule Reminders:
Ø
Do read the rules and inform your students.
There are major differences in the rules from CHSAA
to NFL, and you are responsible for knowing those. The manual is online at NFLonline.org Old copies of the rules are obsolete. Please read the rules and pass them on to
your kids. It’s no fun to get this far
and have people not know the rules and have to break kids’ hearts. L Please read the rules. Please don’t put
me in that position. L
Ø
The
policy debate topic remains the same.
However, the LD and Public Forum topics change. PLEASE, PLEASE do not
make your students suffer by bringing them to this most important meet of the
year with the wrong topic.
o
March
Public Forum Debate Topic--TBA
o March/April
Lincoln Financial Group/NFL L/D Debate Topic--TBA
Ø Talk to your interpers
and make sure they have an original
printed published source that they WILL bring with them to the
tournament. (No, internet sources are
not acceptable.) They must also have a copy
of the script as they perform it with their transitions and added words
clearly marked as such. Failure to have
either of these will mean a DQ if there is a protest! Make sure your interpers
know that using scripts in rounds is NOT allowed.
Ø
You can NOT enter a team without a real coach on
site; that means someone who can do what you can do. The person who is bringing
the team must have their name on the registration sheet, signed off on by the
principal! We must have coaches to run this tournament, so NO, you can’t send
your kids with a parent or other replacement who can’t do the jobs you can do.
Ø This tournament is run by your NFL
Committee (Chair Renee Motter,
Pauline Carochi, Nancy Groves, and Jeff Borst; Dave Camous will be sending us all good thoughts
from the high seas), but we need all of
us. So get out your rule book and start
brushing up!.
I am more than happy to answer any questions you might have, so
please let me know if you have questions.
(Please
give your students these reminders BEFORE arriving at Nat. Quals.)
Do
Not Forget These Very Important Items:
- If your
cell phone goes off in a round, a judge may give you last place, and you
may be disqualified for unethical conduct!
- No
cameras or recording devices of any kind may be used in ANY round. NO
judge EVER has the permission to tell you otherwise. Yes, you will be
disqualified for violating that rule.
- You
must compete under the code on the registration sheet. If you do not, you
WILL be disqualified. I gave your coach copies at registration. LOOK at it
and be sure you have the correct code.
- There
is no set schedule. Rounds run as quickly and as often as possible.
Therefore, you must watch postings. You leave at your peril.
- You
cannot be more than 5 minutes late to a round. If you are having trouble
finding a room, get to the judges table and ask for help! Yes, being late
will get you disqualified.
