North Mecklenburg H.S.
Debate and Speech
Dear Fellow Forensic Coaches,
North Mecklenburg H.S. is pleased to once again host its one day tournament for southeastern U.S. schools, the Fifteenth Annual Jimmy K. Poole “Viking Classic”. The tournament will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017, along with our Twelfth Annual "Steven Davis" Carolina Challenge Cup, a competition between North and South Carolina schools. We were thrilled to have survived the hurricane last year and hope to have record numbers of competitors for this year.
As is our tradition, the tournament will be regular open competition but is also "novice friendly". Besides the usual novice PFD, LD & Congress, we have additional novice categories in speech events. We will offer novice speech events but reserve the right to collapse a novice division into the open category if there are insufficient entries. If that happens, a 'best novice' award will be given. As a reminder, Declamation is for freshmen and sophomores only.
Along with the regular sweepstakes trophies, we will again offer competition for the prestigious Carolina Challenge Cup (CCC). Coaches from North & South Carolina schools may designate six of their varsity competitors to compete for the cup and the winner will be based on the records of the those six competitors entered (a PF Team or Duo counting as one) from each school. The special traveling trophy will be awarded to the winning state and kept by the winning school. Whichever state wins the trophy five times will get to retire it.
We will continue to offer the "CAROLINA CHALLENGE CUP Jr." No traveling trophy, but a special "novice sweepstakes" cup for the first place novice team will be awarded to the designated six top "novice category" competitors (including Declamation). Rules are the same as for the varsity "Carolina Challenge Cup". For the purposes of definition, novices are those students who are in their first year of any forensic activity. By ‘forensic activity’, we mean any participation in any of the NFL/NSDA sanctioned events. PLEASE SEE DEFINITION UNDER THE "EVENTS DESCRIPTION". If a novice category is collapsed, then those novices registered in that category will not be eligible to complete for the CCC Jr.
We should be able to accommodate all our attendees as usual, but please be patient, REGISTER REASONABLY and encourage your students to commit early! As was the case last year, we have also had to pattern speech events with NO double entering within a pattern due to space issues.
Jennifer Aldridge, our assistant head coach, will be returning as this year's TOURNAMENT Co-DIRECTOR sharing tournament duties with former head coach, Christopher Rocca.. Please contact HIM for all your administrative questions and policy decisions
Thank you for your consideration. With your co-operation and attendance, we are sure that we can once again have a successful tournament.
