Dear Forensic Colleagues:

On behalf of the Asheville High and SILSA Debate teams, it is my pleasure to invite you to the 17th annual Asheville High Cougar Classic Speech and Debate tournament to be held on Saturday, November 18th, 2017.  This tournament typically draws between 500 and 600 students from about 35 schools.    This year we will offer four rounds of JV and Varsity LD Debate, JV and Varsity Team Public Forum, and Individual Events as well as two sessions of Congress.

CFL of Charlotte members:  Due to the new CFL of Charlotte policy that no one in any event will be sent to NCFL Grand Nationals without participating in a mimimum of three CFL local tournaments, the Cougar Classic will offer Policy Debate as an opportunity for your students to earn participation at one of their three required tournaments.  However, schools are limited to a maximum of four entries per school and we will not hold the event unless we get a minimum of seven total entries.

Please note that we offer a JV and Varsity format in debate and congress. Novice debate and congress will not be offered.  JV is defined as anyone in their first two years of competition in ANY speech and debate event.  Those who normally fall into the novice category will be considered JV at this tournament.   All speech events will be OPEN except for Novice Reading.

Trophies will be everything you've come to expect at tournaments throughout the region and the mountain hospitality provided by our staff and our town will be unsurpassed!   Additionally, we will once again offer an attractive award for the judge who writes the best critiques of the tournament as well as a special percentage sweepstakes award for the smaller, non sweepstakes team that has the biggest percentage of team members winning trophies (minimum of 5 entries to be eligible).  We believe it’s time that the smaller schools are also given a chance at the “big trophy.”  So if you are a smaller school, this could be your big chance!

We respectfully ask that only coaches register teams for this tournament.  Entries submitted by students will be removed without processing.  For liability purposes, we also require that a school faculty member be present with the team on the Asheville High campus at all times during the tournament.

Additionally, due to liability issues, we are not able to accept independent entries.  Each team must be representing an actual school by name and be registered by an official at that school.

On behalf of our team, our parents, and our entire coaching staff, we extend to you a warm invitation to attend the tenth annual Cougar Classic!

Most sincerely,

Keith Pittman
