January 30, 2010 Dear Coaches: You are invited to the La Porte High School Speech Tournament on Saturday, February 20, 2010. Final Registration will be from 7:00 – 7:45 A. M. and the extemp. draws and Round 1 for all other events will begin at 8:00 A. M. (Yes, we're on “Mitch-West” or Chicago time.) The deadline for your entry is Friday, February 12, by 11:30 P. M. (Chicago Time). We are using web registration via Joy of Tournaments. Varsity competition will be offered in all IHSFA speech events. All events will have three rounds and a final except Broadcasting. BROADCASTING will be run following the rules for the IHSFA State Tournament. (All 6 venues) We will supply all of the informational materials. Students should bring their own supplies (stopwatch, paper, tape, scissors, highlighter, pen or pencil). Prepared outlines may not be brought into the preparation area. IHSFA doubling rules will be followed in the tournament with the following exceptions: Impromptu may double only in Extemporaneous Speaking. Extempers may double only in Impromptu Speaking. Doubling must be attempted at the contestant’s own risk. ENTRIES: Limit of five per event. Limit of 36 per team. DROPS: May be picked up prior to Round One but will not count for sweepstakes points. EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING: Topics will be selected from the Christian Science Monitor, Time, Newsweek, U. S. News and World Report, and The Economist. DISCUSSION will use the 2010 IHSFA Sectional topics. We will have food for sale in for breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria. There will be a judge/coach lounge in the Staff Dining Room just south of the cafeteria. La Porte High School is a SMOKE-FREE CAMPUS! JUDGES: Bring one judge for every five student entries (six entries = two judges). Please train ALL of your judges to write good critique sheets. CALL MARY IF WEATHER CONDITIONS SEEM QUESTIONABLE at 219-363-6618. AWARDS: Eight ribbons will be awarded in each event. Students earning ribbons will be counted for sweepstakes unless they represent picked-up drops or are beyond the 36 entry limit. Sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the top ten schools. We will use the 8, 7, 6 formula for calculating team sweepstakes points. ENDING TIME: We would estimate awards beginning at 3:30 PM. PRE-REGISTRATION is due no later than 11:30 P. M. (Chicago Time) on Friday, February 12 online @ www.joyoftournaments.com. We will email you your code numbers on the Thursday before the tournament.
