2016 Mid-America Cup @ West Des Moines Valley
Dates: 9/24/2016 - 9/26/2016

The Fourth Annual Valley Round Robin will be held on Friday, September 23, 2016, prior to registration for the main tournament.

The competition takes place at the West Des Moines Library. Round 1 begins promptly at 8:30 am. A light breakfast will be served beginning at 7:30 am. 


The 12 debaters at the Round Robin will be divided into pods of 6. 

There will be five preliminary debates. Each debater will hit every other member of their pod.

The debater from each pod with the best overall W/L record in their grouping will advance to finals. 

Verification of Attendance 

I’m thrilled at the set of debaters who have accepted the invitation to compete at the Round Robin! If, for any reason, your situation has changed such that you no longer plan to attend, please let me know immediately. A number of students are on the wait-list , and as many of them would have to alter travel arrangements in order to attend, I want to be able to notify them of any drops or changes as soon as possible. 


Tournament Registration

You do not have to do anything "extra" to register for the Round Robin. If I have a written acceptance of your attendance, the Round Robin fee will be added to your tournament registration once you sign up for the tournament.


All competitors at the Valley Round Robin are requested to also compete in the Valley Mid-America Cup. If your student has not yet been registered for the regular tournament, please enter their information immediately at www.joyoftournaments.com/ia/mac


Dietary Needs


The tournament will be providing a lunch and dinner. In addition, students and judges who house will probably be provided either meals or snacks by their host families. If you have any allergies or other specific dietary needs or restrictions, please inform us of those no later than Tuesday, August 24. 




The entry fee for the Valley Round Robin is $150.00. If you need to hire a judge, the cost is an additional $200.00. WE HAVE VERY FEW HIRED JUDGES AVAILABLE -- PLEASE PLAN TO PROVIDE A JUDGE. Checks should be made out to The Friends of Valley Debate. Please bring payment to registration on the morning of Friday, September 23 (see below.)


Fees will be added to the JOT fee pages of participating schools. 



We request that all competitors bring a judge to cover their entry. Schools with two entries should provide two judges. A limited number of judges are available for hire at a cost of $200.00 (see fees, above.) Please let us know the name of your judge(s) no later than Wednesday, August 24. When the list of judges has been compiled, I will send it out to all competitors.  



The 12 competitors will be divided into pods of six. Within each pod, there will be a five-round round robin.  If possible, each round will be adjudicated by two judges. At the end of five rounds, the top performer in each pod will advance to finals. Performers will be ranked first by total wins and losses, then by head-to-head, then by adjusted speaks, then by total speaks, then by random number. 



Every participant will receive a nifty participation award.

The two Demonstration Round participants will each receive handsome crystal loving cups.
