August 2, 2011
Dear debate colleagues,
You are cordially invited to the 2011 Mid-America Cup, to be held at Valley High School and Valley Southwoods freshman high school. Registration will occur at the West Des Moines Marriott on Friday evening, September 23. Preliminary rounds will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 24 and 25. Elimination rounds (from quarters on) will take place at the West Des Moines Marriott on Monday, September 26. See the tentative schedule for details.
Some major improvements to the tournament are being introduced this year:
• The Mid-America Cup is now an octafinals bid to the TOC in LD debate.
• The Mid-America Cup will introduce a new Team Sweepstakes award, an actual Mid-America Cup, for the team with the top overall performance at the tournament.
• The Friends of Valley Debate will be donating a portion of tournament proceeds to The Voices Foundation to help make debate accessible for more students across the country.
As always, the Valley Mid-America Cup will offer top-notch competition in varsity policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and public forum debate. We are pleased to announce that:
• Warren Sprouse of Cedar Rapids Washington High School and Melanie Johnson of Iowa City West High School will direct the policy debate tab room.
• Ernie Rose and Scott Tomsu will direct the LD tab room.
• Tim Sheaff, head coach of Dowling Catholic High School and stage manager of the NFL awards ceremony, will direct the Public Forum tab.
• Once again, we will offer Student Congress competition.
• We will continue the classic Mid-America Cup awards, including the Giant Mallets for top speakers.
• Once again, the Mid-America Cup offers TOC bids at the semifinals level in policy debate and the semifinals level in Public Forum Debate.
