Griffin High Bear Classic Debate Tournament
Dear Colleague:
The Griffin High School Speech and Debate Team invites you to the second annual Griffin High Bear Classic Debate Tournament to be held at Griffin High School. Please join us for competition, fun, and hospitality on September 17, 2011.
Registration will be held from 7:00 AM until 8:00 AM. The opening announcements will be at 8:15 with first round pairings released following the announcements. Your assistance running the tournament on time is requested.
In Varsity Policy, no student judges will be allowed. You must have either a coach or a college debater judge Varsity. In JV Policy, only your best student judges are allowed. They must be in their third or fourth year of debate. In Novice Policy, we will only take your best second, third, or fourth year debaters to judge.
A hospitality lounge will be available for judges and coaches. The lunch option for the students will be a catered lunch available for purchase. Tickets will be $6.00 and includes an entree, salad, bread, drink, and dessert. The dessert will be a chocolate fountain, and the students will have the chance to dip their items in the fountain. We are pleased to offer this at our debate tournament. Students will have to purchase tickets at registration and provide the ticket when they go through the lunch line. We will have a vegetarian option as well.
Lincoln-Douglas debaters will use the September/October topic. Public Forum will use the September topic. Please consult www.nflonline.org for topic releases. DI, HI, OO, and DUO speakers will have a total of ten minutes each round to speak. Impromptu speakers will have 7 minutes altogether – that is up to 2 minutes preparation time and 5 minutes speaking time. Extemp speakers will have thirty minutes of preparation. Prose/Poetry can be 5 to 10 minutes (30 second grace period either way). IE’s may double enter in other IE’s but not in PF, LD, or Policy.
The pre-registration deadline is September 12, 2011 at 4:30 PM. All changes must be made final by Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 5:00 PM and drop fees will be assessed after that time. Drop fees are the original registration fee. Once regristration closes and judges are hired, we will not be able to make changes. So if you agree to hire a judge(s), you will have to pay for them when you check in regardless of whether or not you bring additional judges. We have agreed to hired judges, they will be there, so we must pay them.
There will be four rounds of debate and three rounds of individual events (IE’s will have finals during round four). Policy Debate will be standard 8/3/5 with 8 minutes of preparation time in each round. It is assumed that novice debaters will be debating on their FIRST resolution. Novice debaters must use only GFCA Novice Evidence and must abide by the rules of the Georgia Forensic Coaches Association. For a refresher on the rules, please visit the Georgia Forensic Coaches Association website (http://thegfca.org).
Each school should supply one judge for every four LD and PF persons debating, one judge per two policy teams debating. One judge should be provided per five IEs.
Sincerely,
Leslie R. Fagin, Director of Forensics, Griffin High School
Amy Lawrence, Assistant Director of Forensics, Griffin High School
