2010 STANFORD INVITATIONAL
The Stanford Debate Society is pleased to invite you to the 24th annual Stanford National Invitational. Since February of 1987 students from across the nation have been joining us for this national level competition.
PHONE REGISTRATION:
Phone registration is available between 6pm and 8:30 pm by calling 650-868-6730.
Schools may only register by phone if they meet the following criteria.
1. Their full payment has been received. (Checks received through today have been credited to your Joy of tournaments account. Please click on your bill to make sure your account reflects a zero balance.)
2. They have no changes to make to their entry or judges at registration.
** Schools in Varsity Policy/LD will be able to check their strike sheets at registration, but NOT via phone registration.
NEW FOR 2010:
* REGISTRATION OR OPTIONAL NEW PHONE REGISTRATION: Mandatory tournament registration will be held at the Marriott of Santa Clara on Friday, February 5, from 5 pm - 8:30 PM. Although it is recommended that coaches register in person, the tournament will be offering a courtesy phone registration. In order to be eligible to register by phone a school’s fees must have been received by the tournament and they must have no changes to their judges. Please note, that no changes to varsity LD or Policy judges will be accepted at registration whether in person or over the phone as strike and ranking sheets will have already been issued and processed.
* A JV DIVISION IN ALL IE EVENTS: Students who did not compete in any high school speech events prior to August 2009 are eligible to compete in our new JV division.
* NO ROUNDS ON FRIDAY: In order to make tournament travel easier for schools and to provide you with a more efficient and on time tournament experience, rounds for this year's Stanford Invitational will all begin on Saturday. Schools will be required, however to register on Friday evening from 5:30 PM to 8: 30 PM.
* QUARTERFINAL ROUND IN IE's: All varsity IE's with 60 or more entries will break to a quarterfinal round. Currently that includes OO, DI, SP, HI and IMP with all other events very close.
* DEBATE ROUNDS: We continue to offer seven preliminary rounds in our Varsity Policy AND Varsity LD schedule (and we DO guarantee that all 5-2's will clear in these two events); AND we are tentatively planning to offer 7 rounds in Parli and Public Forum as well (and we guarantee that all 6-1's will clear, and some 5-2's)! Please note that JV CX and JV LD will definitely have some late elim rounds on Monday, although of course this will only effect a small number of students / schools. Parli and Pofo are also likely to have some elim rounds carry over into Monday.
* PUBLIC FORUM FINAL FOCUS: We are pleased to announce that Public Forum debate will include two minutes for the final focus speeches!
Special Awards:
*CHAMPIONS RECEIVE AN IPOD: Your squad will be excited to know that in addition to their trophy the following students will each receive a special award. The past few years this has been an iPod or iPod Nano! For the 2010 tournament we have another great award for the ...
- Champion in Varsity Policy AND
- 2nd place in Varsity Policy
- Champion in Varsity LD AND
- 2nd place in Varsity LD
- Champions in each Varsity IE event
- Champions in Parli debate
- Champions in Public Forum debate
- Champion in Student congress
Note: Champion is defined as the 1st place winner only. Awards this year are for students only.
* IE CHAMPIONS ALSO RECEIVE A PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIP TO CAMP: In addition to their trophy and iPod Nano the champions in each Varsity IE event will receive a 50% scholarship to attend the Stanford National Forensics Institute in Individual Events. Champions in each JV event will receive a 25% scholarship to attend the Stanford Individual Events Institute.
Updates:
* ENTER EARLY: The tournament has filled in most events for the last several years, so please be sure to enter as early as possible. While we hope that we are known for our efforts to be as accommodating as possible, obviously, once we are full, there is simply no way for us to accept additional entries regardless of who you are or how much we like you!
Over 100 schools have already registered for the tournament, and varsity policy and LD are over last year's numbers. If you are planning on attending, particularly in these two events, please enter as soon as possible, as we do anticipate having to impose limits if for no other reason than to seek to maintain and improve the quality of the tournament.
* HOTEL RESERVATIONS:The tournament hotel is the Marriott of Santa Clara at $89 per room per night, up to four per room (this truly is an amazing rate for a property of this quality, it often runs $139 or more even on a weekend rate; $250 to $300 or more during the week!). This rate is guaranteed for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights only, but should be available on a limited basis (and if booked promptly) for early arrivals and late stay-over.
Reservations can be made by calling 408-988-1500 (ask for the Stanford Invitational tournament rate) or by CLICKING HERE.
Note: IF THE HOTEL INDICATES THAT "the block is full" and that they therefore cannot book rooms for you, please contact Matthew Fraser, as accommodations can often be made with his direct contacts at the property. We are asking that you please do stay at the tournament hotel if you can, as this assists the tournament in being able to book rooms for tournament functions, particularly for the IE prelims, at a reasonable rate. Please identify yourself as with "Stanford Debate" to receive the tournament rate.
* EXPERIENCED JUDGING: Please note our expectations for quality, experienced judges, particularly in Varsity and JV Policy and Varsity and JV LD. If judges are found to not meet these criteria due to false information being provided, the judge may be removed from the pool, and double the original judge fee shall be due. Please be sure to EITHER bring FULLY qualified judges in Policy and LD debate OR make arrangements to hire judging from us early. We may not be able to accommodate requests to hire judges after Tuesday, January 19. Each round missed will result in the assessment of the fee for one uncovered team!
* YOUR CONTACT INFO: Coaches please be sure that all contact info in Joy of Tournaments is CURRENT, ACCURATE, and COMPLETE, as last year there were several schools entered with outdated contact information, which obviously leads to much difficulty. In particular, please make sure the your E-MAIL ADDRESS and TELEPHONE NUMBER are updated and correct.
QUESTIONS: Questions about the 2010 Stanford Invitational should be directed to tournament director Mr. Matthew Fraser, or our other staff by calling the Stanford Debate Office at (650) 723-9086. We may be reached by e-mail at stanfordinvitational@yahoo.com. In general, email is probably the more efficient way to reach our staff, and likely will receive a much quicker response.
We view this tournament as an opportunity to provide a service to the high school speech and debate community, and hope that is apparent to past attendees. We welcome feedback about how we can continue to improve the Stanford Invitational. So that we may accommodate all of your students who wish to compete, please take care of your tournament registration right away, and please book your hotel as soon as possible. This will insure a pleasant and trouble free tournament for everyone, and allow us to host you in the way you deserve!
