The Seawolf Debate Team in conjunction with ASAA & First National Bank are, once again, proud to host this year's State Championship tournament. We are genuinely happy to be serving you and your students during this event! We aim to run an efficient tournament that enables all of our State's competitors to get the best possible feedback from judges; engage one another in the forensics arts in a way that is fun, entertaining, and educational; and gives them the best opportunity to let their talents shine.
Registration for competition will take place entirely through this website. (The entry deadline will be 11:59 pm on February 7th.) Entry fees, academic award applications, and anything other than event registration will be handled separately. Linda Park should be sending out information in a separate e-mail providing the necessary details for those functions.
Before you begin the registration process, let me highlight a few items. As always, we will use the ASAA DDF rules. For information regarding the rules of a particular event, see the DDF Handbook, at the following URL:
http://asaa.org/sportsactivities/DDF/pdf/2011-12DDFHandbook.pdf
We will offer the standard events hosted at the Alaska State DDF Championship tournament. We will once again hold the State Championship in Congressional Debate jointly with the ASAA tournament. Since it is a separate competition, it will not count against your student's limit to participate in three events. Any competitor may take part in Student Congress. (In fact, they do not even have to be on your "State team" of 15 students. So, if you have any extra students who are at the tournament to watch/time, tell them to go join in on Congress.) They do not have to attend all sessions; however, the chances of placing greatly increase if they do. If your squad thinks someone might like to participate, let me know. If you would like to submit legislation or legislation ideas please e-mail me NLT Feb. 1st at shawn.briscoe@uaa.alaska.edu). I plan to post the legislation packet on this site on or about Feb. 8th. Students should feel free to enter the Congress even if they haven't registered before the tournament.
When registering your squads, please ensure that a coach is identified each day to fill your judging obligations (at least 1 judge per school per day). Ideally, you will only be used as standby judges. That being said, I know several coaches enjoy judging and have a wealth of experience that can provide exceptional comments on the ballots. Thus, if you would like to judge -- not simply as a standby judge -- please indicate that you are happy to judge in the notes section of your judge registration.
For those schools in Anchorage, I would really appreciate if you could help with the judge recruiting effort. I know that you all are used to helping track down judges for the local tournaments. It would be very helpful if you treat this like any of the regular season tournaments by providing a few judges for State. Unless they are signing up for an entire day, you should e-mail me those judges separately.
If you have any questions about the registration process, please don't hesitate to e-mail me at shawn.briscoe@uaa.alaska.edu.
Your tournament staff will be comprised of:
Steven Johnson (Host)
Shawn Briscoe (Tab Director)
Linda Park (ASAA Representative)
Diane Swonger (ASAA Representative)
I can't wait to see you at the State tournament. Please tell your competitors that I wish them the best of luck and hope their 2011 State Championship tournament is a fun experience!
Welcome & Best of Luck!
